In Blood Rage, each player controls their own Viking clan’s warriors, leader, and ship. Ragnarök has come, and it’s the end of the world! It’s the Vikings’ last chance to go down in a blaze of glory and secure their place in Valhalla at Odin’s side! For a Viking there are many pathways to glory. You can invade and pillage the land for its rewards, crush your opponents in epic battles, fulfill quests, increase your clan's stats, or even die gloriously either in battle or from Ragnarök, the ultimate inescapable doom.

Most player strategies are guided by the cards drafted at the beginning of each of the three game rounds (or Ages). These “Gods’ Gifts” grant you numerous boons for your clan including: increased Viking strength and devious battle strategies, upgrades to your clan, or even the aid of legendary creatures from Norse mythology. They may also include various quests, from dominating specific provinces, to having lots of your Vikings sent to Valhalla. Most of these cards are aligned with one of the Norse gods, hinting at the kind of strategy they support. For example, Thor gives more glory for victory in battle, Heimdall grants you foresight and surprises, Tyr strengthens you in battle, while the trickster Loki actually rewards you for losing battles, or punishes the winner.

Players must choose their strategies carefully during the draft phase, but also be ready to adapt and react to their opponents’ strategies as the action phase unfolds. Battles are decided not only by the strength of the figures involved, but also by cards played in secret. By observing your opponent’s actions and allegiances to specific gods, you may predict what card they are likely to play, and plan accordingly. Winning battles is not always the best course of action, as the right card can get you even more rewards by being crushed. The only losing strategy in Blood Rage is to shy away from battle and a glorious death!

The best game with the best minis

Reviewed by on

Hands down my favorite game out there. It looks like it's all about combat but it's really not or atleast it's about far more than that. To win you really need to pay attention to what is going on around you. Every decision is tense and every game is close.

My number 1 game!

This is the best game I've ever played and my number 1 for the foreseen future. I don't see this changing anytime soon.

Ragnarok has come!

I’ve played Blood Rage about 5 times, mostly with my husband but occasionally with some friends as well. I’ve actually never played it with three players but the gameplay is similar in each scenario.

Rules & Game Mechanisms

Blood Rage does a great job of combining the mechanisms of card drafting and area control to create a game that’s highly strategic, enticing and always keeps every player on their toes. The game takes place over three rounds or ‘ages’. Each round starts with card drafting and then has the players taking actions which include playing cards, placing their vikings on the board, and initiating combat. It’s straightforward and easy to learn but with a lot of opportunities for creative gameplay.

The game does two things extremely well which combine to make it really stand out. First of all, everything you do has increased victory point values from round to round, at just the right amounts to make it so that previous rounds are valuable but even players with fewer points in an earlier round still can come back in a later round. Secondly, there are many avenues to victory including losing battles. That means that you can lose and be right back in the fight by slightly changing your strategy and while someone may have an advantage after one round, there’s plenty of opportunity for them to be overpowered by the other players in the following round.

Art, Theme, & Components

The art of this game is great. The cardboard is just fine quality and the miniatures are the excellent, highly detailed quality you would expect from any CMON game. All in all, it’s all top notch.

Strategy & Replayability

Blood Rage does a great job of having lots of potential strategy and replay-ability options. As I mentioned earlier, there are just a lot of different avenues to win. I’ve won through completing quests, sacrificing myself to Ragnarok, and more traditional area control means. I do think that the strategy becomes more interesting with more than two players so there is a limit there, but even with two it’s interesting and 'thinky' with enough options to make each game a bit different.

I have two complaints regarding this game Number one it that even though the game tends to be very close, the final score often has a much wider spread. After a lot of posturing and moving around, it’s common that one or two battles determine who gets their points in the final round and who doesn’t, leading to the victor of those battles to shoot ahead in final scoring.
Number two is that the art and theme of this game is not gender balanced. In this game there is one all female clan and three to five all male clans, depending on whether you include the 5th player expansion and kickstarter exclusive clans.

Final Thoughts

Blood Rage is a great game that’s easy to get into with interesting strategy. It’s slightly plagued with issues of gender parity, making the 5th player content that much less attractive, but it is an excellent game and a lot of fun. And honestly, the miniatures are really cool, especially if you take the time to paint them like we did!

Thanks for taking the time to read my review

Viking dudes on a map!

Eric Lang has once again out done himself with this one. Firstly, production quality is literally incredible. The miniatures are detailed, and sturdy. I would recommend sleeving the cards (they see some heavy handling). The rules are fairly simple and elegant. Serious as well as light gamers can enjoy an intense game of Blood Rage. I would genuinely highly recommend this title to anyone really. It is easily one of the most played games on my shelf.
