Excellent Game

I really enjoyed playing the base campaign. I can't wait to play some of the expansions. Just make sure you get a good gaming group for this one. Had this super drunk dude just invite himself, and it kinda spoiled the evening.

It's Alright

Reviewed by on

This guy in my office is obsessed with board-games, I suspect because he's realized he will never know the touch of a woman. It's kinda sad, but also, it makes sense. Anyway, he bought this game a while back and nagged us to play it. There were free snacks, and I didn't have anything better to do, so I got super drunk and went. The game was alright. 3 out of 5 stars.

Best way to start!

Reviewed by on

This is the simplest and most affordable way to start playing MTG.

Well packaged with dice and everything. They could have thrown more tokens into the mix as you always end up needing more.

Best to get it before they are gone, apparently Wizards isn't going to make them any more.

Great for beginners or collectors

Reviewed by on

This deck is a good place for beginners to start playing Magic, or for collectors looking to finish their collection with the exclusive cards contained inside.
The 2 booster packs gives new players a small boost towards deck building and upgrading and the deck has some good card synergy to test out with friends...Just don't expect it to be competitive at Friday Night Magic!

Forbidden Island review - quick set-up, quick to learn, fun as solo and team play

Reviewed by on

Forbidden Island features all the main game mechanics that earned Matt Leacock's reputation. Although similar to Pandemic and Forbidden Desert, it differences nevertheless distinguish it from the others and make it worth buying. Its finest features include the easy set up, easy of learning and intense replay value as both a four-player team or a solo player.

The set up is quick, but nevertheless offers randomisation; in other words, no two islands are ever the same, which escalates its replay value. You can play it alone, or in teams, and this co-operative. If you are looking for a game that demands collaboration and planning, that is cognitively challenging, as well as tense and fast-paced, Forbidden Island checks all the boxes. As an aside, I love the fact that it is packaged in a beautiful tin box, rather than cardboard.

Feels like a FPS but with dice!

Reviewed by on

Loosely based off of the Decent and Imperial Assault boardgame mechanics (same game designer), Doom is a "One VS Many" skirmish style 'tactical miniatures' game. But it plays like the Doom FPS arcade shoot-em up! One player assumes the role of the Invader while the remaining four players are the UAC marines, equipped with an arsenal of weapons including chainguns, plasma rifles, grenades, chainsaws and the ever powerful BFG 9000! The Invader has control of a host of demons ranging from Imps to Caco demons to Pinkys and to the all impressive Cyberdemon.
The Minis in the game, as with all Fantasy Flight games, are superbly sculpted and really deserve to be painted. They're just amazing. The game consists of several mission which are quick to setup and easy to play. Unlike Descent and Imperial, there is no real 'campaign' mechanic here - its a quick and dirty fight and it works brilliantly. Marines have some or other objective to complete in each mission and the invader, well - the invader simply has to gain as many frags (kills) as is needed to win.
The one mechanic which made this game loads of fun was the 'glory kill' - if a demon is staggered (wounded to a certain point), a marine simply has to move into that spot and SQUISH! - the marine has now earned a glory kill card which grants health and bonuses.

I did find that the first 3 missions were extremely unbalanced and in favour of the marines and needed to house-rule a bit after consulting the forums on board game geek. But all in a good and solid game.

Such a fun game. We have played it as a group of adults at our year-end function and had great fun. It has equally been great fun to play it with our kids aged 4 and 6 as it is simple enough for them to grasp too. Would highly recommend it!

Dungeon Brawling in Ravenloft!

Reviewed by on

Dungeon brawling. That's probably the best way to describe our first play through of Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft the Boardgame. Having played the more traditional D&D way back in my yonder years, the feels and nostalgia of the classes, spells, races and monsters were all present in this immersive co-op board game, coupled with hints of dungeon claustrophobia and sheer awesomeness.

I received this beauty of a game as a birthday gift from my beauty of a wife and after about 11 plays in, is on my list as one of the most re-playable & enjoyable games I own. I enjoy games that a highly thematic and Ravenloft delivers. You actually feel as if you're in Strahd's castle, descending the dark deep dungeons as you and your party of heroes strive to complete your quest. But beware! Evil lurks behind every corner, every door and wall and the Vampire Lord of the Castle stirs in his sleep...

Excellent follow up to the Dungeons & Dragons Board Game

Reviewed by on

If you're a fan of the Drizzt series (I am), then this co-op, easy to play D&D board game is just for you! With familiar faces from the R.A. Salvatore series including the legendary drow Drizzt Do'Urden and his companions Catti-brie and Bruenor Battlehammer, this dungeon (or cavern) crawl game is a good introduction to the world of Dungeons and Dragons.
For 1-5 players, the adventures in the game will have you exploring Menzoberranzan, the Underdark caverns which are home to the Drow and all the creepy monsters including the evil spider Goddess Lolth and her minions.
The game can be used in conjunction with other D&D board games such as Castle Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon and allows you to pretty much build your own scenarios and campaigns. All in all, I found the heroes in this box really strong with excellent abilities and some good plastic miniatures and monsters. I did find the scenarios a little lacking compared to Ravenloft but it is still a very solid game.

The start of something great

After trying futilely to decipher a second edition player's handbook, I'm so grateful to have found 5th edition. It makes the whole game intuitive and welcoming to n00bs like myself. I now feel perfectly equipped for years of adventures with my friends.
It's beautifully written, illustrated and a breeze to follow!
