One of the best party games to play. Great for a big group and each game does not take that long.
But you will end up playing it over and over again because no one wants to stop.

Played this game at a friend's house for the first time, super easy to understand and really fun to play. The world expands as gameplay continues, making objectives easier for both you and your competitors to achieve. Rules are fairly straightforward, might take a couple of rounds to fully understand in practice. Would highly recommend

An accomplishment in game design.

Reviewed by on

The other two reviewers have already struck the nail right on the head. All I can add is that some people have suggested that the game does not play well with only two players. This is not true. Although Architects of the West Kingdom certainly benefits from having more than two players - the game is still fun and tense at two. Plus, there is extremely little nastiness in the game, which makes it great for couples.

Fun game

I would recommend on getting the expansions if you liked this game.

It is a great game, not too easy, not too long and there is replayability.

Not a luck reliant game (exept for the cards delt), you need to anticipate attacks and launch them.

A mix between russian roulett and uno.

A much better game to play that luck based games.

Great Card drafting Game

Reviewed by on

Saint Petersburg second edition is a revamp of the first edition of the game and most people in my opinion still prefer the iconic first edition of the game. The original version was published in 2004 and the second edition was released 10 year later in 2014, with some tweaks to the rules in order to better balance some the mechanic round usage of money. Additionally, they recreated the artwork and added few new modules that can be integrated to the based game.
In Saint Petersburg, players purchase different types of worker cards, building cards, aristocrat cards, upgrade or exchange cards and the newly added market cards. Each of these categories of cards have their own phases of the game where all the cards cost you money, but also afford players the opportunity to earn money or points at the completion of each phase. Worker cards can be bought in the worker phase and can generate money. Buildings provide points, new market (yellow) cards bring in new resources and aristocrats provide players with a bit of both. The exchange\upgrade cards are special cards that can be used to upgrade buildings, workers or aristocrats and you can exchange this card with a card of the same type that you already have in front of you.

This is a fun economic card drafting game that is easy to learn and understand, with an exception to a few rules. It is important to start working with the right type of worker cards and aim to collect a set based on the category of cards that are drawn. Money is scarce in this game and is only awarded at the end of some of the phases that generate money, so it is important to ensure spending is monitored. In summary, the game ends when one of the card stakes is empty. Players would then count up their aristocrats, amount of money left over and score their points. The player with the most points wins the game. Overall this is a simple game with simple rules, streamlined mechanisms and great decision making choices which all combined makes it a very fun family game.

A Great new experience

Reviewed by on

Chronicles of Crime is a cooperative game of crime investigation using an app, where players are investigators that have to solve crime. The easy to use board game, with evidence category cards, special items cards, character cards, location cards and a touch of Virtual Reality makes this a very unique experience compared to some of the other games you may have already played. Players are able to play different crime scenarios and solve them in many different ways based on the approach taken.

Players can start with a tutorial scenario on the app and then pick a case scenario they want to play. The goal of the game is to solve the scenario based on the given task in that scenario which would be solve a murder, find stolen artefact or even discover some truth. This application can be downloaded for free and using the scan and play functionality, players can interact with each component (character, location, special cards, location cards etc.) of the game when solving the case. The virtual reality experience allows players to see crime scenes in 3D view which requires a smartphone or related electronic device. The base game contains a tutorial and five crime case scenarios, but more content can be downloaded directly on the app at a cost.

I have just played this game with group of friends and this experience is very unique and different where the use of technology and interaction with physical cards using an app is just amazing and is a testament to how far board gaming has come thus far. The re-playability on this game may be a question if you complete all the scenarios but I suppose you could always trade the game in with your friends or reselling it back to your local board game store. Having said that the application does seem to have new content and you could buy new scenarios that are loaded to keep playing the game. Additional, expansion such as Welcome to Redview, Noir Expansion and the new launch of 1400 has additional content that will create more hours of game play. I think this a great buy if you are looking a very different experience and indulge in new ways of playing board games.

When Mars come calling - You decide how to change it.

Reviewed by on

You are in a position of power, as the CEO of a corporation you are in charge of how YOU will colonize and terraform Mars.

I've not had many games that left me with the level of satisfaction at the end of the game as this one. When you look at a terraformed planet before you and your two opponents and see the oceans and forest spreading out. When you see the planet you helped to make.

This is definitely a medium-heavy weight game and not for the feint of heart. Turn by turn you are competing with either other players (corporations) or a deadline, to launch projects (cards), build up resources (electricity, money, plants, tools, etc), or claiming territories. All of this to drive up the three things we need to make Mars livable: Oxygen, Water and Heat. The game can end suddenly when all three are on their ideal target.

The goal of the game is to be the Corp with the highest score at the end of the game, this is achieved through improving the planet, completing certain projects or reaching milestones first.

Interaction between players (Corps) is limited, with the game being more supportive to wards the same goal then competitive.

Most of my games were 2 or 3 players, this is ideal to reduce the wait time between your action, more players tend to make the game too long.
Solo play is fun and challenging, with a tight deadline to terraform Mars within 14 turns.

Not the easiest game to master, but still a must have.
The expansions adds new flavor and challenges.

Number 1 family game for a reason

Reviewed by on

Wingspan has been number 1 family game on the BGG website for a very good reason.I tend to favor medium-heavy weight games and this one is a clear outlier in my collection.

Wingspan is a action placement, engine builder for the novice and the experienced. I have had many friends who refused to play board games ask me after one play to play this again. This has become one of the gateway games of choice for many.

The rules are extremely simple to follow, with most novice players picking up the flow within a round or two of watching another player play. It is easy enough that with a little bit of strategy many new players to beat experienced veterans.

A bit of the game relies on luck, but building a successful engine (bird habitats) makes a huge difference. The rules are easy enough that an 8 year old child will be able to pick it up, with their reading skills being the major factor.

Whether you are looking for a nice family game, or a gateway game for beginners, this will be a must have for your collection.

PS: I forgot the most important aspect of all. The artwork of the game is simply amazing! I can not stress how lovely and vibrant the colors of the whole game is. From the art on the cards, to the colorful eggs, everything screams of quality and thought that went into it.

My only gripe with the game is that the dice tower (bird feeder) feels a bit vulnerable to damage with time, but there are numerous alternatives to this.

Good game for those who love agriculture, worker placement and medium weight games

Reviewed by on

Agricola is ideal for anything from a solo game to a tightly packed 4 player, cut throat experience.
The game forces decisions and trade-offs in the true Uwe Rosenberg fashion. Between turns you need to decide on a strategy and stick to it. This is a game where you need to cover as many bases as possible, with the jack-of-all-trades usually being better off. The game can be punishing when you forget to feed your meeples between rounds, and the expansions making this even harder.

This is suitable to children, with proper guidance and some adjustment, even a six year old can learn the basics. An let's be honest, every child loves building their own little farm. The online community on BGG can be quite helpful in this instance.
