Awesome Headset

Reviewed by on

Many years I've used the Tritton Entry level headsets and thought I was OK in the headphone category. Till It broke. I then got these babies and honestly couldn't be any happier. The sound profiles are awesome I even use them on my mobile phone. The surround sound brings another aspect to gaming with headphones on. They aren't overly expensive and for their price its bang for buck. Battery life last long enough for you to realize you actually need to take a break lol.

Great Gaming Headphones

I almost sent these back after all the horror stories I'd been reading about about the headband snapping. I decided to keep them and try them out anyway - while not ideal, I don't mind taping it up ...

I've had mine for over a year now with frequent use and the headphones are still holding up strong. The battery needs charging a little more frequently than before (lasts maybe 6+ hours now) but otherwise I'm still more than satisfied with this purchase.

Really great sound!

Easy to use - great sound - mic works well - battery lasts long - What more could you need?
Yes, you should buy this. This is worth the price.

Sound quality: 8/10 (just lacks that extra bass)
Fit: 7/10 (after a few hours can get a bit sore)
Build: 9/10 Really solid for the price

These headphones are on the same level as the astros and turtle beach headsets but at a third of the price, really great buy.

Best value for money at the price

This headset is the easiest to use of all the PS4 headsets I've come across. Sound is amazing, companion app adds a lot of extra value. Quality rival Turtle Beach high end headphones, comfort is something to behold, build quality is typical Sony greatness

Great entry level headset

I was in the market for a decent entry headset that will work on the PS3, PS4 and PC. I have read many positive reviews of the Sony (Gold) Wireless Stereo Headset 2.0 and so I purchased the headset from Raru a week ago.

The audio quality and clarity is great, and the VSS button (Virtual Surround Sound) is a great added feature. Unfortunately the Virtual Surround Sound only works with the PS3 and PS4, but the audio quality (stereo) on the PC still sounds great. Another great feature is the Playstation Companion App where you can adjust the equilizer settings on your Playstation to your taste. Adjusting these settings are very basic, but is still a nice touch. The headset is also very comfortable and also works very well with other mobile devices with a 1,25m long 3.5mm audio cable.

The battery life is good, with 8 hours average.

To keep costs down Sony made the hinges on the foldable headband also of plastic. For some this could pose a problem, but if you take care of your equipment, this should not really be a problem.

If you are in the market for a decently priced wireless headset with good audio, without breaking the bank, you cannot go wrong with the Sony Wireless Stereo headset.

Overall this is a great headset for the price (R1404).

One year on...

I purchased this headset a year ago, and it is still as good as the day I unboxed it.
Plug and Play with the PS4, PS3 and on Windows pc - using the wireless dongle.
Wireless headset app is available in the Sony store under the applications section. Game developers load their audio settings to the app and you can download these settings and apply it to your headset if you wish.
For the price, you can not go wrong with this wireless headset. Its comfortable as it is completely padded in a soft cushion. The audio quality is great and the battery life is excellent. Depending on your volume setting, you can get between 6 - 8 hours of gaming on a single charge.

PlayStation gold wireless stereo headset (Review)

Reviewed by on

I was shopping around for an entry level wireless headset, when someone recommended to me the PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headset. So I decided to take the plunge and ordered myself one online from Raru, initial impressions on the build quality is good for what you pay for (R1,404). I love the minimalistic design with all the buttons molded into the headset. It has a solid arch around the head and a large pair of cans, which can slide up or down several notches when you are looking for a perfect fit. The headset can also fold into the center on a pair of solid hinges and loosely click into place, making it easier to store using the travel pouch that they have included with it. I generally have issues with over ear headphones but I must say these sit pretty comfortably, and I had no issues when it came to comfort levels while playing for extended periods of time.

Setup on the PS4 was a breeze, you simply plug in the USB adapter, switch the headset to the ‘1’ position, and within a few seconds it automatically pics up that you have connected your headset to the PS4. No fiddly setup required, and you don’t need to be an audiophile or a degree in rocket science to get it up and running. The only drawback is that the Bluetooth dongle requires the use of a single USB port on your PS4, so if you are already lacking space it might be an issue so I would recommend getting a USB hub if you are running more than two devices. All of the audio controls are located on the left earpiece, including the power switch that also lets you swap between two audio profiles and the toggle for the 7.1 audio. It takes a while to get used to the button placement, but once you know where they are located you don’t need to remove the headset to change the settings.

With the factory default settings, the bass is a bit “thin” so I highly recommend downloading the companion app for the headset and either setup your own presets or choose one of the genre specific presets. The headset makes provision for two manual presets you can adjust by flipping a switch on the headset while you are playing. The application is pretty basic, but the presets worked well overall, and it is a feature I ended up using when switching between games and media. The only pain I had with it was when watching a Blu-Ray movie I had to exit the movie completely to tweak the audio if I was not happy with the audio quality. Also if you are looking at a headset that isolates the audio completely look elsewhere, as the audio “bleeds” out so someone next to you might get annoyed with you if they are looking for some peace and quiet.

The Bluetooth range on the headset is pretty good, I sit about 4 meters away from my screen and had no connectivity issues. Even at a range of 6 meters I had no connectivity issues, but after that 6 meter “barrier” the audio started to cut out. So for gaming purposes the headset it is perfect, but if you want to use the headset to listen to music in another room look elsewhere as I doubt it will have the reach. The headset also supports virtual 7.1 surround sound, which you can toggle using the ‘VSS’ (virtual surround sound) button on the headphones. The system works surprisingly well it allows you to pick up finer sound details, such as characters talking to you from different directions and knowing from what direction gunfire is coming from. However the system only works on the PS3 and PS4 and has yet to be implemented on the PC which is a shame.

Battery life is really good, on a single charge I managed to get just a smidgen over 8 hours of gaming out of it before I had to charge it again. Which is more than enough for the average gamer, recharging it also does not take too long just under 45 minutes before you can use it again. The only let down or shall I say issue I have with this headset is the audio quality of the built in microphone, at times people had issues trying to make out what I was saying to say while playing online. If you are “audio obsessives” with lots of money to spend on a headset then look elsewhere, but for everyone else playing games on either PS3 or PS4 that wants crisp, clear sound without a lot of fiddling or tweaking, the Gold Stereo Wireless Headset comes highly recommended as an entry level wireless headset.

I've used this headset for about 2 months now on a daily basis, mostly for work.

The headset works great connected to my PC for all my VOIP needs. Simple plug and play.
A Sony driver is also available via Windows Update (Win 8.1) which allows you to charge the device via PC USB.

I've also used the headset with my Vita and PS3 and it works flawlessly. Plug in the dongle and off you go.
Headset also supports the option to hear yourself speak which is a must for VOIP use.
The virtual surround works well and sounds beautiful with Blu-ray media.

You will not be disappointed :)

Great Quality Headset

I have been using this headset for a few months now and this is what I have to say:

This headset is great value for money, both the speakers and mic is very clear, and it sits very comfortably on the head. And most people with big ears won't have the cups crushing their ears.

The feature I like most is the fact that it isn't just compatible with PlayStation products. It can be used on an Xbox or even a PC, however you require a chat cable (which is supplied) if you want to chat on non-PlayStation Products.

Set-up is easy, just plug in the USB receiver and turn on the headset. Sound settings can be adjusted from the console. Plus, the batteries are rechargeable (Standard Micro USB charge)

The headset also folds so doesn't take up as much space, plus a bag is supplied to store it in.

In short, a brilliant, comfortable, versatile, and easy to use headset for people not looking to blow their budget.

If you have a PS4 and a family that does not want to hear your games' sounds then you must get this headset. The headset is very easy to set up and it takes 1 minute to sort out the settings.

The battery life is good and being rechargeable you save money on batteries.

The wi-fi does not cause any interference or crackling noises. (My X41 headset did this)

The microphone works fine and all my friends say that they can hear me clearly.

For this price you will not get something better.

I am very very happy with my purchase.

Nice headset. I mostly use for online gaming, it has presets you can set but bit of an effort to have to plug the headset into the ps3/4 every time you want to load a different preset.
Very easy to setup with ps3 and ps4 (just plug in and play).
Decent battery life, decent sound.
Microphone is a bit soft when playing online, but it is unobtrusive and built into the headset.
All-in-all, for the price tag and the fact that it is legitimately supported by Sony I am impressed.
