David Jason plays Wilkins Micawber, a character who first appeared in Charles Dickens' 'David Copperfield', in this lavish period comedy. Micawber is a man who lives his life as if he had a store of riches behind him, but who is in fact completely broke. He just thinks that if he keeps his spirits high then something good is bound to come along, and with this simple philosophy he enriches the lives of all those around him.

David Jason, known to many for Only Fools & Horses, but even better in the Touch of Frost series, is an excellent British actor, and perfect in the prequel to Dickens : David Copperfield, about the man who is always optimistic, always in debt, yet somehow always manages to survive. Gentle humour, and never dull. Pity this show wasn't extended to a second series, as one can see many promising plot lines starting here
