Description

Documentary tracing the life of a chimpanzee that was raised as part of a New York family during the 1970s. Part of a scientific project attempting to challenge Noam Chomsky's thesis that language is inherent only in humans, Nim the chimpanzee was raised by human surrogate parents in a home environment. Following Nim's life as he interacts with his human hosts, the film charts the controversy surrounding the case, and the impact Nim had on those who worked with him.

4 stars out of 5 -- "British filmmaker James Marsh recreates this tale of an ambitious primate language study through traditional face-the-camera interviews, clever graphics and dramatic recreations. A powerful musical score adds gravitas."
Steve Ramos (1 Jul 2011, )
Chicago Sun-Times
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "PROJECT NIM, a fascinating documentary, follows the life of a chimp named Nim Chimpsky as it's raised like a human baby....The chimp emerges from this experience as a more admirable creature than many of its humans."
Roger Ebert (6 Jul 2011, )
Entertainment Weekly
"[A] fascinating and in many ways tragic documentary..." -- Grade: B+
Owen Gleiberman (8 Jul 2011, )
Los Angeles Times
"Through no fault of his own, Nim's life turned out to be a flesh-and-blood Rorschach test that revealed as much about human nature as it did about the capabilities of chimpanzees."
Kenneth Turan (15 Jul 2011, )
Movieline
"Very quickly it becomes clear that the life of Nim Chimpsky is foremost a story about the human animal, and human behavior."
Michelle Orange (7 Jul 2011, )
New York Times
"[A] probing, unsettling study of primate behavior....Mr. Marsh is less interested in comparatively dry matters of linguistics or neurobiology than in a humid, messy domain of identity and emotion that has, in the past, been the terrain of psychoanalysis."
A. O. Scott (8 Jul 2011, )
Sight and Sound
"PROJECT NIM is a valuable insight into the current state of the anthropomorphic imagination."
Chris Darke (1 Sep 2011, )
Total Film
4 stars out of 5 -- "Marsh's sensitive doc is a light look at some dark clues to the kind of creatures we really are."
Jonathan Crocker (1 Sep 2011, )
Wall Street Journal
"PROJECT NIM, an enthralling and appalling documentary by James Marsh, chronicles the collision of two species."
(8 Jul 2011, )
