Diary of a Chambermaid (Region A Blu-ray)
Description
Legendary director Jean Renoir's film version of Octave Mirbeau's novel, DIARY OF a CHAMBERMAID was adapted for the screen by Burgess Meredith. Paulette Goddard (Modern Times) plays the title character, a sexy and saucy servant named Celestine, whose forthrightness has a curious effect on a wealthy Parisian household. Determined to elevate her lot in life, Celestine uses her unsubtle charms to beguile the master of the household. Burgess Meredith (Rocky) delivers an astonishing performance as Captain Mauger, the bizarre and shell-shocked neighbor and Judith Anderson (Rebecca) is equally great as the mistress of the household. Luis Bu$uel remade DIARY OF a CHAMBERMAID in 1964 with Jeanne Moreau in the lead.

- Overview
- Celestine, the chamber-maid, has a new job in the country, at the Lanlaires. She has decided to use her beauty to seduce a wealthy man, but Mr. Lanlaire is not a right choice: the house is firmly controlled by Madame Lanlaire, helped by the strange valet Joseph. Then she tries the neighbour, former officer Mauger. This seems to work. But soon the son of the Lanlaires comes back. He is young, attractive and does not share his mother's antirepublican opinions. So Celestine's beauty attracts Captain Mauger, young Georges Lanlaire, and Joseph. Three men, from three different social classes, with three different conceptions of life. Will Celestine be able to convince Georges of her sincerity?
- Synopsis
- Set at the turn of the century, DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID stars Paulette Goddard as Celestine, a chambermaid who has left Paris to take a position at a mansion in the provinces. Intending to hook an affluent husband, she casts about for an appropriate choice. Her employer Captain Lanlaire (Reginald Owen), is under the thumb of his autocratic wife (Judith Anderson). Yet the eccentric Captain Mauger (Burgess Meredith) and the Lanlaire's attractive son Georges (Hurd Hatfield) remain interesting possibilities.
- Notes
