Description

This sequel to the smash-hit comic-book epic THE AVENGERS finds the iconic superhero team dealing with a threat of their own making: a sentient robot called Ultron (voice of James Spader), who was originally designed as part of a peacekeeping program. Since the events of the last film, Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) have been working to take down various cells of a secret society of villains known as HYDRA. Their zeal to make the world a better, safer place inspires Tony Stark, genius billionaire and alter ego of Iron Man, to create Ultron in order to respond to additional threats that the Avengers aren't able to handle. Ultron, unfortunately, takes this directive way too seriously -- he believes that world peace can only be achieved by exterminating humanity, and he'll stop at nothing to accomplish this goal. The battle between the Avengers and Ultron is further complicated by the appearance of superpowered siblings Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), who ally themselves with the homicidal android. Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders co-star as, respectively, S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives Nick Fury and Maria Hill. Joss Whedon, writer and director of the previous AVENGERS movie, returns in both capacities here.

Movie Critics
A.V. Club
"Ultron, with his muscular metallic frame and expressive alien features, certainly looks cool."
A.A. Dowd (28 Apr 2015, )
Chicago Sun-Times
"Rarely has a comic book movie struck such a precise balance between legitimate character development, crackling good humor, genuine peril and good old-fashioned big-screen entertainment."
Richard Roeper (28 Apr 2015, )
Empire
4 stars out of 5 -- "Thanks to Whedon and the most charismatic, compelling cast you’ll find anywhere, Age of Ultron redefines the scale we can expect from our superhero epics but still fits human-sized emotion amid the bombast."
Helen O'Hara (17 Apr 2015, )
Entertainment Weekly
"With his smarmy metallic croak, Spader is perfectly cast as the voice of Ultron..."
Chris Nashawaty (1 May 2015, )
Hollywood Reporter
"Ultron is a cool and sophisticated creation; what he lacks, of course, is a heart, which is what makes him such an imposing villain. A sleekly designed robot you might even call handsome, he makes an excellent intellectual and smart-ass sparring partner for Stark..."
Todd McCarthy (21 Apr 2015, )
Los Angeles Times
"As written and directed by the skilled Joss Whedon, this AVENGERS movie even has, in its namesake Ultron, a convincingly twisted villain played by James Spader."
Kenneth Turan (29 Apr 2015, )
RogerEbert.com
"AGE OF ULTRON is remarkable....Amid the usual quota of quips and lightning and robots and explosions are moments of pathos, splendor, sentiment, and operatic horror..."
Matt Zoller Seitz (28 Apr 2015, )
Rolling Stone
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "AGE OF ULTRON is a whole summer of fireworks packed into one movie."
Peter Travers (21 Apr 2015, )
Total Film
4 stars out of 5 -- "James Spader, who provides Ultron's voice, is perfect, oozing intelligence and sophistication tinged with rage and righteous indignation."
Rosie Fletcher (1 May 2015, )
Washington Post
"The draw here is the band that’s getting back together, as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow recapture the prickly chemistry that makes them click."
