Synopsis
Don Cheadle co-wrote, directed, and stars in this biopic of legendary jazz musician Miles Davis, which takes a free-form approach to its subject's life that mirrors his playing style. As the story skips around in time, it depicts Davis' attempts to get his career back on track following a period of listlessness and drug addiction in the '70s, his relationship with a journalist (Ewan McGregor) who wants to profile him, and his troubled marriage to a former dancer (Emayatzy Corinealdi). Michael Stuhlbarg co-stars.

Movie Critics
A.V. Club
"Cheadle demonstrates some talent behind the camera, especially in the film’s deliberately jagged leaps from present to past and back again....He’s also predictably charismatic as Davis, capturing the man’s raspy voice, hard stare, and infinite swagger."
Mike D'Angelo (31 Mar 2016, )
Empire
"[W]ith this passion project -- Cheadle directs for the first time, co-writes, produces and stars as Miles Davis -- he’s certainly aimed to push the limits of the biopic."
Dan Jolin (18 Apr 2016, )
Los Angeles Times
"[T]his valentine to jazz in all its forms stars Don Cheadle in arguably the best performance of his decades-long career, as vibrant a portrait of a difficult, passionate, committed creative artist as anyone could wish for."
Kenneth Turan (31 Mar 2016, )
New York Times
"[A] playfully impressionistic movie."
Manohla Dargis (31 Mar 2016, )
RogerEbert.com
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[It's the] impressionistic flavor that gives the film its crackling, memorable energy."
(1 Apr 2016, )
Rolling Stone
"As an actor, Cheadle is flawless, letting us feel we're really hanging with a musical genius possessed of a volatile temper and a talent to match..."
Peter Travers (30 Mar 2016, )
The Atlantic
"[An] excellent new Davis biopic....[The film captures] its subject’s musical genius while still delivering a quick-paced plot..."
(31 Mar 2016, )
The Guardian
3 stars out of 5 -- "Like Davis’s music, the film’s structure is modal, with Cheadle getting the legend’s changing stance spot on..."
Mark Kermode (24 Apr 2016, )
