Description

Triple bill of films in the 'Ghostbusters' franchise.

'Ghostbusters' (1984) stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. After their scholastic grant is withdrawn, New York parapsychologists Peter Venkman (Murray), Raymond Stanz (Aykroyd) and Egon Spenler (Ramis) decide to go into business as Ghostbusters. Initially scorned, the trio become celebrities after ridding a hotel of a troublesome ghoul, and are called in by musician Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) when she experiences strange disturbances in her Central Park apartment.

In the sequel, 'Ghostbusters 2' (1989), the Ghostbusters are struggling to get work as they find themselves being sued by municipal authorities. When a physical embodiment of evil is discovered lurking beneath the city, however, their services are once again required.

Finally, 'Ghostbusters' (2016) sees four ladies take the lead with Abby (Melissa McCarthy), Erin (Kristen Wiig), Jillian (Kate McKinnon) and Patty (Leslie Jones) forming the new Ghostbusters. As the team get news of spirits lurking beneath the streets of New York City, they don the famous boiler suits and set out on a mission to destroy the ghosts and save the world.

Synopsis
When Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murrary) and his Columbia University colleagues (Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson) are kicked out of their prestigious academic posts, they start a private practice as professional ghost-catchers. Although the three parascientists are idle for awhile, their television advertisements finally pay off when beautiful Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) contracts them. It seems her apartment has become the entryway for ghastly ghosts and goofy ghouls hellbent on terrorizing New York City. Soon they're going to her rescue, trying to rid the city of the slimy creatures. GHOSTBUSTERS hit US screens in June of 1984 and went on to become one of the most successful comedy films of all time, spawning a sequel and a popular animated series.
Notes
The screenplay for "Ghostbusters," written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, is said to take its premise from the Michael Winner-Jeffery Konvitz' 1977 feature film "The Sentinel."

"...It's Murray's picture, as the popular comedian deadpans, ad libs and does an endearing array of physical schtick....Weaver is deliciously sexy..."

"[T]he movie rests on the comic chops of its stars. The four women share a palpable enjoyment of each other’s company..." -- Grade: B
Jesse Hassenger (11 Jul 2016, )
Boston Globe
"[A]ny time Chris Hemsworth wanders through as Kevin, the himbo equivalent of a sexy but pea-brained secretary, GHOSTBUSTERS hits notes of such exquisite comic lunacy that you might miss the point for laughing."
Ty Burr (14 Jul 2016, )
Entertainment Weekly
"McCarthy, of course, gets off some lunatic one-liners; McKinnon, the group’s loose cannon, can crack you up just by widening her wildcard eyes; Jones mixes her signature bluster with an air of gung-ho joy; and Wiig’s timing is as Swiss-precise as ever."
Chris Nashawaty (10 Jul 2016, )
Film Comment
"The sisterhood at the center of GHOSTBUSTERS is stronger than a proton beam, more powerful than ectoplasm, and able to leap tall tales in a single bound....[Performerd] with zest and originality..."
Film Comment Staff (14 Jul 2016, )
Los Angeles Times
"Some of the jokes here are notably sharper and more wittily syncopated than in that earlier movie, and the low-level 'boo!' scares are a bit more potent, thanks to a three-decade improvement in visual effects..."
Justin Chang (12 Jul 2016, )
New York Times
"Ms. McKinnon makes for a sublime nerd goddess....Here, she embodies the new GHOSTBUSTERS at its best: Girls rule, women are funny, get over it."
Manohla Dargis (10 Jul 2016, )
Observer
3 stars out of 5 -- "[E]ntertaining, generally likable....Throw in Andy Garcia and the best JAWS joke of the year and GHOSTBUSTERS justifies its popcorn existence."
Mark Kermode (17 Jul 2016, )
Rolling Stone
"The big surprise here is McKinnon....She's a live-wire whose every gesture, reaction and line-reading seems fresh and off-the-wall -- a spontaneous eruption of hellfire hilarity."
Peter Travers (12 Jul 2016, )
The Guardian
4 stars out of 5 -- "Playing a brainy yet bizarre engineer in charge of perfecting the ghost-trapping machinery, McKinnon marshals a bevy of endearing quirks into a star-making, supremely confident turn."
Nigel M. Smith (10 Jul 2016, )
Total Film
3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he film’s stealth weapon is Kate McKinnon’s swaggering steampunk, serving up a bewildering range of death-dealing gizmos with cute quips."
Kate Stables (11 Jul 2016, )
Washington Post
"Sunny, slimy and profoundly silly, the new, lady-centric reboot of GHOSTBUSTERS immediately silences the backlash and bluster that's preceded it....An easygoing, enjoyable family comedy."
