Synopsis
After the death of her husband, a woman named Marnie (Susan Sarandon) relocates to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter Lori (Rose Byrne), a Hollywood screenwriter. While Lori frets about her mom's smothering ways, Marnie keeps getting involved in the lives of others: She dates an ex-cop (J.K. Simmons), helps an Apple Store employee study for school, and pays for a lesbian wedding. Lorene Scafaria wrote and directed this comedy-drama, which is based on her relationship with her real-life mom. THE MEDDLER made its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.

Movie Critics
A.V. Club
"Here Scafaria makes nice use of her widescreen frame, and cuts the movie together crisply -- a lot of the jokes actually come from the cuts, and the way they punctuate the often pitch-perfect dialogue." -- Grade: B
Jesse Hassenger (21 Apr 2016, )
Los Angeles Times
"You gotta love Marnie Minervini, the nosy, needy, New Jersey transplant and title character of THE MEDDLER. That she's played with such instinctual warmth and comic verve by the estimable Susan Sarandon is the icing on a well-baked cake..."
Gary Goldstein (21 Apr 2016, )
New York Times
"Marnie is the biggest source of the humor, and Ms. Sarandon plays her beautifully in every shade of sunshine."
Manohla Dargis (21 Apr 2016, )
Rolling Stone
3 stars out of 4 -- "Carving her script out of her relationship with her own mother, Scafaria turns The Meddler into a hilarious and heartfelt tribute to mothering in the sense of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
Peter Travers (20 Apr 2016, )
Variety
"THE MEDDLER feels less like a venting session than it does a collection of nearly incredible true stories too good for Scafaria to have kept to herself."
Peter Debruge (14 Sep 2016, )
