Description

Sam Neill and Julian Dennison star in this comedy drama based on Barry Crump's novel 'Wild Pork and Watercress'. When city-dwelling juvenile delinquent Ricky Baker (Dennison) is placed in the care of foster parents Bella (Rima Te Wiata) and Hec (Neill), he is immediately disheartened by the prospect of living in the wilderness. When Ricky decides to make a run for it, escaping into the deep, dark forest, Hec quickly follows in pursuit of the unprepared boy. When child services visit Hec and Bella's home only to find it empty, they launch a national manhunt as they fear the boy may have been abducted.

"The 13-year-old Dennison lends quirky heart to HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE a New Zealand import with a knack for finding humor in dreary, even ill-advised themes."
Tom Russo (30 Jun 2016, )
Empire
5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]his adaptation of Barry Crump’s 1986 novel WILD PORK AND WATERCRESS is the ideal showcase for Waititi’s exuberant sense of humour and flair for inventive absurdity."
Dan Jolin (11 Sep 2016, )
Los Angeles Times
"Every once in a while, a small, unheralded film comes along, so smart and funny, such a pleasure to experience, you can't believe your luck. HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE is such a film."
Kenneth Turan (23 Jun 2016, )
New York Times
"Charming and funny, it is a drama masquerading as a comedy about an unloved boy whom nobody wants until someone says, Yes, I’ll love him. Much of the humor comes from the child, who’s at once a pip and a gloriously expressive ambassador for the director Taika Waititi’s cleareyed take on human nature and movies."
Manohla Dargis (23 Jun 2016, )
RogerEbert.com
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Waititi’s film defies its convention through grounded characters, witty dialogue, compassionate filmmaking and inventive storytelling. HUNT FOR THE WILDERSPEOPLE is consistently clever and even moving."
Brian Tallerico (24 Jun 2016, )
Rolling Stone
3 stars out of 4 -- "[A]n oddball and oddly affecting take on two misfits finding their metaphorical partner-in-crime match."
David Fear (26 Jun 2016, )
Total Film
4 stars out of 5 -- "As for cameos, Waititi’s hysterical skit as a vicar sums up his comic pitch: ribbing, but never cruel. That kindly spirit is shared by Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne’s turn as a sausage-bearing friend to Ricky, while Waititi’s more crackers wit gets a vigorous showing in Rhys Darby’s Psycho Sam..."
Kevin Harley (12 Sep 2016, )
