"Rogue One" puts the 'War' in "Star Wars"

Reviewed by on

The Star Wars saga has always, at its heart, been about a family that plays an important part in the history of the universe. At the centre of "Rogue One" is a father and his daughter: Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), an engineer abducted by the Empire and forced to design the Death Star, and his abandoned daughter, Jyn (Felicity Jones). At a young age, Jyn is rescued and raised by Saw Guerera (Forest Whittaker). Years later, Jyn meets a group of rebels and she becomes embroiled in a plot to steal the plans to the Death Star. Their mission could change the outcome of the war against Darth Vader and the Empire...

This is the first Star Wars movie outside of the regular "Episodes". Because of that, the film feels a little different: "Rogue One" does not begin with the famous main theme and title crawl; the battle scenes seem more hectic, more dangerous; and the overall feel of the story is a lot more serious. That's not to say there is no humour. There are plenty of laughs to be had, usually due to the robot K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). However, I do think that this new series of standalone Star Wars films will offer fans a slightly alternative experience - and that's a good thing. It will also allow different filmmakers to fill in the gaps in the vast Star Wars universe.
