Birth of a Nation (DVD)
Description
Nate Parker writes, directs and stars in this biographical drama which tells the story of Nat Turner (Parker) as he struggles with a life of slavery in the antebellum South. His owner Samuel (Armie Hammer) takes advantage of Nat's literacy and preaching ability to try and quell the resistance displayed among his other slaves. Nat witnesses brutality and injustice inflicted upon his people and his preaching becomes ever more ardent. But as his passion grows, he becomes more of a problem for the slave owners and is himself brutally whipped. Though he grew up alongside Samuel, Nat has lost all respect for him and those like him and with his patience at an end, he is determined that all slaves shall have justice; and if not justice, vengeance.

- Synopsis
- This historical drama recounts a real-life slave revolt that occurred in 1831 Virginia, led by a black preacher named Nat Turner (Nate Parker). Turner is ordered by his master (Armie Hammer) to tour a number of local plantations, delivering sermons to the other slaves that will urge them against violence and any thoughts of rebellion. However, he is so appalled and sickened by the horrors he sees during his travels that he is eventually moved to fight back against the evils of slavery. Aja Naomi King and Gabrielle Union co-star. Parker wrote, directed, and stars in THE BIRTH OF A NATION, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
