"CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS' charm lies in its lighthearted and lightly scatological silliness....In its most spirited moments, CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS is smart enough to recognize that being dumb can be its strongest asset." -- Grade: B
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky (1 Jun 2017, )
Boston Globe
"[T]he film owns its immaturity. And the argument it appealingly offers in defense is that it’s healthy, even vital, to be able to laugh at scatological silliness, adults included."
Tom Russo (1 Jun 2017, )
Los Angeles Times
"[F]unny, fresh and frantic, playing with format and genre, adding meta, self-reflective winks. The film is propelled by its hyperactive energy and quirky style..."
Katie Walsh (1 Jun 2017, )
New York Times
"If your child would be amused by seeing the word 'underpants' in the name of a movie, this one will entertain....It throws in a positive message at the end."
Neil Genzlinger (1 Jun 2017, )
RogerEbert.com
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "It's straight-up ridiculous from start to finish....It's at its best when it's cutting loose and delivering slapstick and fantasy sequences of escalating absurdity."
Matt Zoller Seitz (2 Jun 2017, )
Variety
"The animation in CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS has a softly popping candy-colored sheen. It’s a very pleasing concoction to look at, and it zips along infectiously..."
Owen Glieberman (1 Jun 2017, )
