"[Vauughn] pulls a Bruce Willis here, shaving his head and substituting intimidating stillness for his trademark motormouthed hyperactivity. The transformation suits him surprisingly well." -- Grade: A-
Mike D'Angelo (3 Oct 2017, )
Chicago Sun-Times
"[The filmmakers] stage the fight sequences with precision and a refreshingly welcome number of medium and long shots devoid of the rapid-fire quick cuts and obvious use of stunt doubles prevalent in the vast majority of modern action films."

"If novelty’s your thing -- and hell, even if it isn’t -- then you should probably buy a ticket to BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99, a veritable feast of images you don’t see every day..."

"[T]his painstakingly paced thriller displays an intensity of purpose that makes it impossible to dismiss....The movie stars a revelatory Vince Vaughn..."

3 stars out of 4 -- "If many male stars of a certain age are destined to become late-act action heroes, we hope this is Vaughn's TAKEN, and his particular set of skills will continue to involve dishing out such graceless, effective hurt."

Variety
"It’s exploitation made with vicious sincerity....Vaughn’s performance echoes the down-and-dirty transformation undergone by John Travolta and Bruce Willis in PULP FICTION..."

Brutal, simple story telling at its best

Reviewed by on

From the director of Bone Tomahawk, S. Craig Zahler, comes a brutal crime drama staring Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, Hacksaw Ridge) and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter). Vince Vaughn plays an excellent portrayal of drug runner who gets caught up in a deal that goes wrong resulting in him being sentenced to a lengthy prison sentence. As a result of the deal going bad he now faces threats of extreme violence to his wife and unborn child if he doesn't kill a specific inmate in Cell Block 99. Vince Vaughn is absolutely brilliant in the role and you soon forget this is an actor known for his comedic parts. The story is simple but effective and serves up a great piece of entertainment over it's 2 hours and 12 minutes running time.

Special features were limited on the DVD to a short 14 minute featurete about the film.

Lastly a word of warning for sensitive viewers. The violence in this film is unforgiving and for someone who feels desensitized to most depictions of violence in films, I was quite taken back by what was shown.
