"COCO teaches a salient point: In the dead, we see ourselves....[The film has] a structure that brings to mind Disney’s renaissance period." -- B+
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky (17 Nov 2017, )
Chicago Sun-Times
"COCO is a bouncy and heart-tugging adventure."
Richard Roeper (21 Nov 2017, )
Empire
5 stars out of 5 -- "While this film packs in adventure and desperately colourful characters, it’s ultimately a moving story about family connections and the complicated ways we love one another. COCO is also one of the most impressively animated films ever."
Helen O'Hara (11 Jan 2018, )
Hollywood Reporter
"Delivering a universal message about family bonds...the gorgeous production also boasts vibrant visuals and a peerless voice cast populated almost entirely by Mexican and Latino actors."
Michael Rechtshaffen (20 Oct 2017, )
Los Angeles Times
"[A] whimsical and high-spirited romp through the underworld from Pixar Animation Studios."
Justin Chang (21 Jan 2017, )
New York Times
"[I]t plays a time-tested tune with captivating originality and flair, and with roving, playful pop-culture erudition."
A. O. Scott (21 Nov 2017, )
RogerEbert.com
4 stars out of 4 -- "[D]rawing heavily on Mexican folklore and traditional designs, it has catchy music, a complex but comprehensible plot, and bits of domestic comedy and media satire."
Matt Zoller Seitz (21 Nov 2017, )
Rolling Stone
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[T]he movie charms itself into our good graces when it enters the netherworld, a neon-colored nonstop fiesta that's a blast..."
Peter Travers (22 Nov 2017, )
The Atlantic
"[I]t is a tale told with considerable wit -- this is one of Pixar’s funniest films -- and genuine tenderness."
Christopher Orr (24 Nov 2017, )
The Guardian
"The Land of the Dead is one of Pixar’s most visually ambitious worlds yet -- a breathtaking vision of interconnected neon-lit boroughs, based loosely on Guanajuato in central Mexico."
(21 Nov 2017, )
Total Film
4 stars out of 5 -- "[An] exquisitely rendered musical fantasy set in the Land of the Dead. The studio’s finest feature since 2015’s INSIDE OUT..."
(15 Jan 2018, )
USA Today
"Effervescent, clever and thoughtful, COCO is infused with an infectious youthful spirit and a deep musical soul in telling the tale of a young Mexican boy with a twofold mission: to grab his musical dreams and heal a familial rift."
Brian Truitt (21 Nov 2017, )
Variety
"[U]ndeniably gorgeous....Poignantly teaching kids to preserve and respect the memory of their elders while reminding them that the source of true creativity is so often personal."
Peter Debruge (20 Oct 2017, )
Washington Post
"The animated celebration of Mexican culture and traditions, directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina, is also darkly funny, imaginative and, of course, deeply poignant."
