Synopsis
Based on the real life story of world famous comedians Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan) and Oliver Hardy (John C. Reilly) as they reach the end of their careers in entertainment, this comedy drama directed by Jon S. Baird captures the desperate lengths the comedy duo have resorted to sell tickets to their stage shows. Set in 1955, and as new talent is coming to the comedy circuit to replace them, the pair face some unpleasant realities about their careers. Written by Jeff Pope.

"John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan mimic two of early cinema’s most iconic figures, which is this film’s true raison d’être."
Mike D'Angelo (19 Dec 2018, )
Chicago Sun-Times
"[A] brisk, meticulously staged [film]...focusing primarily on the legendary comedic duo’s 1953 tour of the United Kingdom, some two decades past their peak years."
Richard Roeper (10 Jan 2019, )
Hollywood Reporter
"[T]he lovely performances by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly should lure a decent number of fans to this warm account of the team's final live performance tours through the British Isles in the early 1950s..."
Todd McCarthy (21 Oct 2018, )
Los Angeles Times
"Propelled by lovely, engaging writing and wonderful performances, STAN & OLLIE, the story of the bittersweet final bow of legendary duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, should move and delight fans of the beloved performers..."
Gary Goldstein (27 Dec 2018, )
New York Times
"Portraying the final days of the remarkable partnership of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, the greatest double act in the history of movies, the tightly focused narrative finds these comedians past their prime, not just in their career but also in their relationship."
New York Times Critic (27 Dec 2018, )
RogerEbert.com
3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Reilly's performance becomes a heartfelt tribute....Matching Reilly beat for beat is Steve Coogan, whose resemblance to Stan Laurel is also rather uncanny."
Odie Henderson (27 Dec 2018, )
Rolling Stone
4 stars out of 5 -- "Coogan nails the fussy mannerisms and mischievous wordplay of the British half of duo."
Peter Travers (27 Dec 2018, )
The Guardian
4 stars out of 5 -- "Superb headline performances from Steve Coogan and John C Reilly are matched by equally sparkling supporting turns from Nina Arianda and Shirley Henderson as Stan and Ollie’s combative wives..."
Mark Kermode (13 Jan 2019, )
Total Film
4 stars out of 5 -- "Coogan plays Laurel with sweet, rheumy-eyed desperation while Reilly, rocking a great fat suit, is the picture of genial gluttony."
Matt Glasby (22 Dec 2018, )
Variety
"[A] gently elegiac portrayal of the pair’s final comic....Well-rehearsed performance chemistry is merely a veneer behind which the two veterans, as tenderly played by Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly, find themselves struggling to click."
Guy Lodge (21 Oct 2018, )
