3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t throws together disparate elements -- subtle performance capture, World War II movie parody, shoe fetishism -- to articulate its hero’s pain. It’s a bold, bonkers move by a filmmaker always willing to walk a tightrope between dark humour and big emotions..."
Ian Freer (19 Dec 2018, )
Hollywood Reporter
"Zemeckis and Thompson condense the true story for dramatic effect."
Keith Uhlich (19 Dec 2018, )
New York Times
"Zemeckis’s version is partly a story of indomitability in the face of hardship and partly a lesson in the practice of kindness. Mark’s resilience is impressive, as is the gentle respect he is shown by friends, neighbors and co-workers."
A. O. Scott (20 Dec 2018, )
Rolling Stone
"You never doubt the good intentions of Zemeckis and Steve Carell, who plays Hogancamp with genuine grace."
Peter Travers (20 Dec 2018, )
Variety
"[I]t brims with ambition....It’s a lavishly odd concoction..."
Owen Gleiberman (19 Dec 2018, )
Washington Post
"The animation is excellent, from the plastic 'skin' of Mark’s action figures and fashion dolls to their stiffly jointed movements."
