White "rapper" Vanilla Ice was harshly criticized as a thief of African-American culture when the single "Ice Ice Baby", from his debut album "To the Extreme" (1990), became the first rap song to reach #1 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart. He also faced legal charges of thievery for his unacknowledged sampling of the 1982 Queen/David Bowie song "Under Pressure" -- "Ice Ice Baby" lifts the song's baseline for its chorus. Much of the furor surrounding Vanilla Ice quickly disappeared, however, when both the film and Ice's next releases failed to capture audiences, and it became evident that he was but another in a long line of one-hit wonders whose 15 minutes of fame were nearly up.
