Overall, I am not a big fan of DC movies, but must say: they did something right with this one (especially the humor and the Marvel jokes). DC movies are generally very dark, but this one - Teen Titans Go! to the Movies - brings some much needed "light" tot the DC cinematic universe. Hence, to my surprise, I might actually enjoy this one more than the kids...

An almost great game

Reviewed by on

Mafia 3 is an open world sandbox game by Hanger 13 in which you play as Lincoln Clay, a young African American man from the wrong side of the tracks who has recently returned from the Vietnam War and is looking to get away from the violence of his youth and the war. Instead he winds up shot in the head, left for dead and on a quest for vengeance. Will Lincoln escape with his soul or will he become the same as the people he has sworn vengeance against?

I found the story in Mafia 3 to work really well and despite a few problems it is one of the most solid open world crime game stories I have ever experienced. Lincoln is a great character likeable and competent but believably dangerous and the game goes through the effort to make him sympathetic but without taking away that edge. He is backed up by a solid supporting cast of characters. Lincoln’s allies are all likeable but flawed to help drive the plot and I especially like the way that the game uses Father James and John Donavan as avatars of Lincoln’s conscience. The villains are properly despicable so that you don’t feel bad about having to stab them in the face. My only nit-picks with the story are that there feels like there is an ally missing for Lincoln to play off of and react to Lincoln’s choices and that the major villain’s motivation ends up feeling kind of dumb and unbelievable.

The story is helped by the good use of setting. Mafia 3 is set in New Bordeaux (a facsimile of New Orleans) during the late 60’s and these two choices massively help make the game stand out and feel unique. Moving the game away from the typical pretend New Yorks and Los Angeles settings again helps the game stand out from other games in the genre as it gives Mafia 3 a unique feel. New Bordeaux has unique features and a nice mix of areas that help make it more memorable. The game opens with a statement warning the player that the game is trying to depict the atmosphere of the time and thus the use of racial slurs and negative stereotypes is simply part of the experience. This atmosphere really helps the game feel unique as there are interesting and fun characters to explore, characters can react in new and interesting ways without throwing off the tone and the game has some new and different themes to explore. This was honestly one of my favourite parts of the game because it allowed the game to still surprise me with the turns that it was going to take in what would have otherwise been a too easy to predict story.

An unintended but welcome surprise that stemmed from setting the game in the 60s is that Mafia 3 has an absolutely banging soundtrack. It is full of classic rock and I am a sucker for good classic rock so the game was right up my alley. When Jim Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower started blaring on the start menu I knew that I was in for a good time. The game also matches songs incredibly well to certain points in the game which manages to add a little bit of extra quality to those moments. My only real criticism of the soundtrack is that I wish there was more of it. The game only has 3 radio stations and in a long game like this the limited number of songs quickly becomes noticeable.

The gameplay in Mafia 3 is a bit of a mixed bag. It plays like a lot of GTA clones with cover based shooting, driving and light stealth. Everything works as intended but it is all a little bit unrefined. The shooting fine but a bit numb and the same can be said about the driving. Both of these are augmented by the ability to slow down time because the developers clearly noticed that the gameplay was not perfect. The stealth is a bit of a problem because it is not great as stealth systems go but the biggest problem is that once you get a silenced weapon the game may as well give you an option to auto-resolve the rest of the game. Combining the overly simple stealth mechanics with a silenced weapon and the time slowing power means that you can clear out entire rooms of enemies without triggering alarms and the difficulty curve takes a dive off of a cliff.

The biggest gameplay change from Mafia 3 from the previous game is that it actually uses the open world which is a big improvement. The game world is divided up into multiple districts each with two racket bosses that can be flipped or killed and a district boss that advances the story. This structure feeds into Mafia 3’s attempted unique selling point where you have to decide how you are going to split the districts that you take over between your underbosses in an attempt at creating a form of management gameplay. The core problem with this design approach is that the management side of the game is as shallow as a puddle. There is no real functional difference between how your underbosses run a particular district or racket other than the various favours and bonuses that they give you so you might as well just split the districts evenly and be done with it. A secondary problem of the management concept is that the game seems to have all sorts of pointless systems built into so that it has something to “reward” you with for taking over districts; for example your money is split between your wallet and safe, you lose half of the money in your wallet when you die while the money in your safe is well, safe. This seems to only exist so that there can be a bonus from one of your underbosses that lets you call a friend to come and fetch your wallet money. It just feels like backwards game design a lot of the time.

There are some other general gameplay niggles as well. Mafia 3 suffers from a terrible bug infestation. Prompts and triggers have a habit of not working. The biggest recurring problem I experienced with this was that often when trying to launch the mission to fight the district boss, I would use the prompt to start the mission, have the UI show that the prompt had completed successfully then have the mission fail to start. The only way to fix this was to exit the game and load up again. Another bug was object failing to spawn in correctly so sometimes objects would be missing but the games favourite trick was to try and spawn object inside of already existing objects sometimes destroying mission critical vehicles. The NPC AI in Mafia 3 is also slightly very borked. The most obvious way in which I noticed was when I was driving and pedestrians would randomly dive out of the way as if I was going to run them over even though I was nowhere near them and this often resulted in me running them over as they would dive “out of my way” only to land directly in front of me. This would also rarely manifest in NPC drives randomly jumping out of their cars when I drove past once again resulting in accidents for no reason. The enemy AI would also occasionally spaz out during combat and shoot at nothing, forget that I existed and could comfortably be tricked into walking into stealth kills despite the huge pile of bodies lying at my feet. Finally the amount of damage that enemies can output during combat can be absolutely ridiculous. An enemy would spawn behind me or their pathfinding would take them on the world’s most circuitous route to me and they would hit me with a couple of shots before I saw them or could react and it would leave me almost dead then other times I would take 20 rounds to the face and be fine and I couldn’t figure out why there seemed to be such a huge damage differential.

However Mafia 3’s biggest flaw is that it has those tell-tale signs of being unfinished. The game starts strong with the first district boss being an absolute highlight in story, setting and mission design but many of the other missions feel lazy and half-assed. Clearly Hanger 13 both ran out of time, money or caring and had to get the game ready to ship with what they could string together from what they had. Mafia 3 rabidly recycles its content so most rackets have you clear out the racket headquarters as part of drawing out the racket boss then have you clear it out again for the boss mission. Some of the late game missions have a whole lot of build-up with cut-scenes and everything which then result in an anti-climactic fight that lasts about 10 seconds. Perhaps this unfinishedness is also responsible for the bug infestation that I discussed earlier. The feeling that I get is that everything is there but the connective tissue is missing: Mafia 3 has enough content but it is all functional and the small flourishes and touches that would properly tie the content together are missing.

Mafia 3 is a decent game with a lot of potential but it lacks the fine-tuned and polished details that would have made it a great game. I enjoyed it but I was disappointed because I feel that it has a lot of unfulfilled potential.

Brillant game. For a fighting game, there are really hours of play to it. After completing the brilliant story mode, there are still tones left to do. The crypt is almost endless as it can be refreshed for new items, an the customizations on each character can really help in playing the game the way you want. Also the challenge towers are true to it's word, it is challenging and the fact that it also refreshes at specific times always make it feel new.

I gained more respect for these men and the brotherhood they have. To be a Navy Seal is not just a work, it's a calling and lifestyle, and that is very clear and heartfelt in this book.
