PopBoxZA Review: Ocean's 8

Reviewed by on

When I first saw the trailer for Ocean’s 8 it immediately piqued my interest. Why? Because, sadly, besides the contentiously shredded all female Ghostbusters flick I hadn’t seen anything like it over the last few decades, if ever. For arguably the first time ever a star-studded cast of women had been rounded up to stand at the helm of a super-slick heist film with no name title male star anywhere in site.

Don’t be mistaken though Ocean’s 8 is not a chick flick. In fact, amid the cast of Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson and co, who in combination sport a plethora of Oscars, Emmys, and Golden Globes, there is a shrewdly crafted plot smart enough to entice any audience member.

It’s slick and sophisticated and as stylish as you hope it is. Deeper than the glossy shots of the Met Gala and the entertainment of the film’s plot there is Anne Hathaway’s Daphne Kluger and her takedown of extravagant and pompous celebrity culture.

maxresdefault

Combined the cast creates a sort of charm that deserves to be explored further. Refreshingly, there’s no need to try to decipher who delivered the better performance as all the characters are treated equally and all the actors are given equal screen time.

Imagine that.

Logically, and from a place of 100% bias, any story could always do with more screen time for the marvelous Sarah Paulson. But objectively each actors’ contribution is not only perfectly weighted but also equally important to pulling the whole thing off.

There will be those who look for similarities in comparison to the George Clooney-Brad Pitt led Ocean’s films. But Ocean’s 8 is intuitively charming and entertaining enough for audiences to realize and agree that the torch has been passed.

Ocean’s 8 is not a film that will change your life. But it is, vitally, a film that will begin to change the conversation and assumption of what audiences want to see on the big screen and elsewhere. Beyond that this cast seems like a heck of a lot of fun to hang out with and I’d happily do so for a number of sequels.

The acting in A Quiet Place is virtually flawless and Emily Blunt is in a class of her own. In a film completely dependent on facial communication Blunt delivers a virtuosic performance of silent emotion.

A Quiet Place is one of the most imaginative and cleverly crafted films that have been created in some time, especially in the genre of horror. It is a magnificent accomplishment of skillful storytelling and is profoundly effective in its understated terror. Though it may ostensibly be about man-eating monsters at its core it is about family. A terrifying thrill, this film exceeds all expectations.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a song you’ve heard at least once. And when you did it was probably unlike anything you’d ever heard before. It’s a song that almost 40 years later is still one of the most influential and memorable songs of all time. It’s apt then that a film of Freddie Mercury and Queen’s epic journey is named after this legendary song.

Biopics are notoriously difficult to get right. The subject matter is often well known by legions of fans and this is especially true of Freddie Mercury and Queen’s meteoric rise to fame and attainment legend status. How do you condense such a larger than life, genial, life into two hours?

While most point out the script as the most important key to any successful film casting isn’t far behind. It would have been a difficult question to answer if you were asked who could possibly be capable of portraying the magnificent Freddie Mercury. After all he isn’t only a legend of his own generation but continues to be regarded as such till today.

The fate of this film was always going to hang on the portrayal of Freddie Mercury and Rami Malek delivers a mesmerizing performance that you will not soon forget. In the performance/singing scenes he makes you believe that he is Freddie Mercury. It can’t and wont be a surprise to anyone if Malek picks up an Oscar for this portrayal. The casting too of Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon is spot on.

Visually the film excels brilliantly especially when allowing the audience to experience the 1985 Live Aid stage from the performers perspective. This is particularly when seeing Bohemian Rhapsody in IMAX is more than worth it. If you don’t experience several goosebump moments and tear up at least once then you need to have a doctor check your pulse.

In an era where most pop songs sound the same it’s no surprise that four decades later we still can’t stop listening to Bohemian Rhapsody. It would be a travesty of monumental proportions if the world, in any era, ever forgot about the majestic brilliance of Queen and Freddie Mercury. With this film their legacy has been it safeguarded even more. What a joy the whole experience was.

As the crown jewel in Disney’s crown Mary Poppins a classic of note. Fifty-four years later she returned with the release, late last year, of Mary Poppins Returns.

With the incandescent Emily Blunt in the starring role the film is utterly charming in every way. Read the review here.

It goes without saying that Funko would jump on board the Mary Poppins train and produce a wave Pops featuring the world’s most famous nanny.

Mary Poppins with kite

This is likely the pop that attempts to capture the most iconic moment in the film: the arrival of Mary Poppins.

Upon first inspection the Pop hits all the right notes – it includes the famous carpetbag and Mary Poppins is clutching the kite that she flies in on. However, when more closely scrutinized the Pop lacks a bit of detail in comparison to the movie version. For one, the coat is black and blue in the film while the Pop is solid navy blue. Funko did ensure that the red scarf is adorned with black polka dots but did forego the silver accents on the buckle and buttons of the coat.

While these smaller lapses in attention to detail could be overlooked what cannot be so easily dismissed is the fact that this Pop does not include the umbrella. Although Funko isn’t in the business of making exact replicas they have chosen to recreate what is likely the most iconic scene of the film and, therefore, should’ve gotten it spot on.

I do also wish they would have angled the feet slightly outward as a nod to the famous Mary Poppins pose.

Overall, the Mary Poppins Returns wave of Funko Pops is rather a letdown due to its lack of detail and puzzling choices [insert incorrect hair colour]. In conclusion, if you were interested in this wave it would be my advice to wait until they go on sale.

Mary Poppins at the music hall

On the way to the Royal Doulton music hall Mary Poppins, Jack, and the children are transported in an animated carriage. The interesting thing about the costuming in this scene is that the clothes have the appearance of being hand-drawn. Funko reproduced the light-pink dress and fascinator, complete with blue and pink birds, beautifully.

However, this is also one of the scenes in the film where Mary Poppins is most obviously a redhead. By far the most glaring mistake in this wave of Pops is the hair colour. If you haven’t seen the film a simple Google image search will reveal that Emily Blunt’s Mary Poppins is a redhead. But for reasons unknown Funko has opted for all the Pops in this range to be brunette.

Overall, the Mary Poppins Returns wave of Funko Pops is rather a letdown due to its lack of detail and puzzling choices [insert incorrect hair colour]. In conclusion, if you were interested in this wave it would be my advice to wait until they go on sale.

Mary Poppins with bag

Taken from the bath scene, which includes the performance of Can You Imagine That, this Pop is somewhat perplexing. But let’s start with the pros. The outfit on the Pop is mostly correct when compared to the film. She’s sporting a bright blue skirt and a white shirt adorned with polka dots. But not only are the polka dots the incorrect colour but she is also missing an apron. What’s more, the Funko version wears the same hat as the first Pop reviewed in this article. Why is she wearing the hat? Beats me. She does have the red bow-tie and carpet bag which do appear in the scene.

Great camouflage and marking section and the models are really great builds to look at and get inspiration.

Only rating it 4 stars because the technical section of the Firefly is a bit short and also the lettering used to describe each picture doesn't match up with it's corresponding information it seems. Not sure if all of them are like this or just mine.

Otherwise another great addition to my collection that will prove useful when I do eventually build a Sherman Firefly.

Epic conclusion to the Dark Seeker Saga.

Reviewed by on

{I believe I've managed to keep this review spoiler free}

I can now confidently say after finishing the game that it is everything that I wanted in a next generation Kingdom Hearts game. Amazing graphics, epic worlds and a story worthy of concluding the 'Dark Seeker Saga'.

I've enjoyed every moment spent with this title and will return to finish up some of the side content left over. The only issue even worth mentioning would be the difficulty, even on proud setting it does not match up with previous entries. I believe this was probably necessary to make the title more accessible but also leaves one to fully appreciate the story. A critical mode is probably forthcoming in future patches and would be welcomed by most longtime fans. In my opinion this does not come close to being a 'deal-breaker' as the combat and game-play is so much fun and highly enjoyable.

The endgame portion is epic and long enough to tie up a lot of story threads that have been established over all these years. Everything from the opening to the last moments (including the secret ending) is expertly crafted to dig deep in the emotional attachment and investment that long running true fans of the series will probably hold. The OST is another stand-out feature and both themes as well as the retooled 'Dearly Departed' is such high points for the series and is used to such great effect in the game.

The Pixar worlds recreated in this game needs special mention. This is probably the closest you will ever come to playing a Pixar movie. Everything is recreated to the finest detail. The musical number in one of the world fits so well and the rest of the worlds are filled with NPCs and open areas that has never been possible in past games. The two times generation gap between the previous main title games and KH3 is amazingly evident especially if you've replayed the older titles recently. The level of verticality and openness of the worlds are great without opening itself up to the busy-work of true open world games. The worlds that border on open-world never lets up on the fast paced story lines and leaves the exploring mostly as optional content (which I kept going back to as the specific game-play elements are so addictive and fun overall).

This concluded chapter left me satisfied although ready for more. It was an experience that will always stick with me. Truly amazing.

Great keyboard. Very solid, types well, great for gaming. Cherry-MX Blue alternates used and they feel just like the real thing.
Only reason this keyboard doesn't get 5 stars is that it doesn't come with software and when I eventually found software for it on their website, the software nearly bricked the keyboard. So PLEASE DON'T USE THE SOFTWARE!!! The keyboard comes with a fairly wide variety of on-board lighting profiles that will cater to most people's needs. Just accept that there is no macro/key-remapping functionality from a software perspective.
Outside of the software issues, this is an amazing keyboard that beats out any other mechanical keyboard in the value for money department and I would rate right up there with anything twice its price. Would definitely recommend.
