This Game Changed Me
Tsakane M onReviewed by
I had never considered myself a casual, and by that I mean in terms of my obsession with video games and belief that all games should be played on the hardest difficulty or else "you're doing wrong". Among my group of friends I had always been the guy who would not stop talking about video games, and I know that at times they really could not stand me. Alas, I could not be bothered, all I cared about was video games, with Devil May Cry being the be-all-end-all of all games at the time.
So there I was, starting my first year at university, just about to wrap up my first block, when the Bloodborne reviews start rolling in; I was intrigued. Now let’s be honest, the current gen was certainly lacking in good titles at the time, and it seemed like this game was going to be the answer to that problem. Upon discovering that I did not need to have played any of the previous Souls titles to play this game, I placed an order without a moment’s hesitation.
So there I was, home after a gruelling time at University, getting ready to unwind during my holidays with what many were already claiming to be 2015’s best game only a few months into the year. Now, I’ve always found difficult games to be enjoyable, and have found myself playing on the highest difficulties in Devil May Cry games without too much trouble. So with that in mind, I thought very little of the “this game is difficult” memes that had been spewed all over the internet. However, nothing could have prepared me for the tumultuous challenge I was about to face. My goodness, I was in disbelief. I’m sure I spent about 3 – 4 hours in the game’s opening area, Central Yharnam, not to mention me dying more than 5 times against the very first enemy in the game – after I got my weapons! Keep in mind that these 3 – 4 hours I speak of were spent trying to make some sort of progress, but honestly, things were looking grim. For the first time ever in my life, I was considering getting a refund. It was absolute madness. I had refused to believe that anyone could possibly be good at this game. But alas, I received some words of encouragement from some kind souls on the internet, and I thank them to this very day for it. I can assure you, after having a boss beat you more than 20 times over, the moment when you finally overcome them is a feeling of joy and relief that you will carry with you for years to come (I’m looking at you Father Gascoigne, Blood-Starved Beast & Rom!). Trust me on this one.
Ever since completing the game, I’ve never been the same. I kid you not, I’ve spent close to 500 hours on the internet on content related to this game. I’m THAT obsessed. Being at University, I would spend whatever free time I had on the Bloodborne subreddit discussing the game for hours on end. Even now, a year later, I visit the subreddit every single day talking to people about the game.
Apart from me becoming obsessed with this game lore and story, in my attempts to learn more about the game, I had learned of director Hidetaka Miyazaki’s previous titles, and I can now gladly call myself a From Software fanboy. This game is literally all I care about, Miyazaki is my hero, he’s created 3 masterpieces in a row with complex stories that rival some of the best games ever created.
And what and experience it is. From the expert level design of interconnected cities and cursed castles, rivalled only by Miyazaki’s previous efforts. The amazing NPC characters you will encounter on your journey that will leave you in tears of laughter and of sorrow. The AMAZING trick weapons (seriously, how has no one thought of this before?) that allow for more variety from a single weapon than most RPGs can ever offer. Miyazaki’s creativity truly shines in his latest project, with creature designs that leave you in awe of the grotesque and puzzling nature, and the absolutely haunting soundtrack only helps in this regard. The 100 piece orchestra truly shines and helps give the game its chilling atmosphere that leaves the player desperate for more once the final credits roll.
I cannot tell you how much of an impact this game’s story had on me without giving away an essential plot detail the reveals itself in the middle of the game, but dear reader, please don’t give up if the game’s difficulty seems overwhelming. I can guarantee you, with the utmost certainty, that it is definitely worth it in the end. This is undoubtedly one of my favourite games of all time, and knowing that this review could perhaps convince another potential Hunter to join our ranks fills me with joy that you too may discover the eldritch truths revealed to us by the almighty Kos(m)!
“Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race.”
Words once uttered by Master Willem, which seem quite fitting in the context of this review. Do you possess the courage to brave the Yharnam wonderland, or will your lack of courage prevent you from experiencing one the greatest gaming experiences of our time?
Everything you have ever wanted.

You Might Not Want It, But You Certainly Need It

Look, in all seriousness, any PlayStation exclusive is worth it's weight in gold. Bloodborne is no exception. If you own a PS4, you have to at least try it at some point. Some people will love it, other people with send their controllers hurtling out the window. I made the mistake of buying this as my first game when I got my PS4. When the ONLY game you own is as frustrating/marvelous as this, it urges you to buy more games from Raru. Which - let's face it - isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Even if you never end up playing it again (like me), you absolutely have to own it.
Probably the BEST exclusive for PS4 at the moment!!!

The story line is massive. The combat system is faster than Dark Souls and feels much more agile,
just to mention even the most difficult encounters is FUN.
A PS4 exclusive that will rip your face off
