It's 1968 and after years of combat in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay knows this truth: family isn't who you're born with, it's who you die for. Now back home in New Bordeaux, Lincoln is set on escaping a criminal past. But when his surrogate family, the black mob, is betrayed and wiped out by the Italian Mafia, Lincoln builds a new family on the ashes of the old and blazes a path of military-grade revenge through those responsible. Intense gun fights, visceral hand-to-hand combat, white knuckle driving and street smarts will all be needed. But with the right crew, tough decisions and some dirty hands, it's possible to make it to the top of the city's underworld.

  • NEW BORDEAUX, A REIMAGINED 1968 NEW ORLEANS: A vast, diverse and seedy open world ruled by the mob and corrupt officials and richly detailed with the sights, sounds and emotionally-charged social atmosphere of the era.
  • AN UNINTENDED AND LETHAL ANTI-HERO: Be Lincoln Clay, an orphan and Vietnam veteran hell bent on revenge against the Italian Mafia for the brutal slaughter of the black mob, the closest thing to family he's ever had.
  • REVENGE YOUR WAY: Choose your own personal play-style, from brute force and blazing guns to stalk-and-kill tactics as you use Lincoln's military training and gathered intel to tear down the Italian Mafia.
  • A NEW FAMILY ON THE ASHES OF THE OLD: Build a new criminal empire in your own unique way by deciding which of your lieutenants you reward, and which you betray...

Not perfect but worth the purchase

I usually count the seconds till I'm able to skip the annoying YouTube ads but this particular ad caught my attention. Mafia 3. I watched the entire thing and decided there and then, not having played the previous installments and no prior knowledge of the franchise, to purchase it the very next day. I was not disappointed.

Set in 1968 New Bordeaux (a fictional reacreation of New Orleans) you play as Lincoln, a Vietnam veteran who takes it upon himself to recruit associates and build a new crime organization while taking out those who have wronged him and his family. Note that there are racial aspects to this game, as you walk or drive along you'll hear of violence against colored folk.

It has an amazing storyline, graphics are great; handling when it comes to driving on the other hand - you are most likely to take a turn right into a wall or another car. However, you can't expect the same handling as a Need for Speed game because its not about the car here - even though Lincoln has a prized possession in his muscle car. There are time when it seems as though the graphics try to catch up to the player; when it loads while you are in the area.

I do have one major concern, and you need to take this into consideration before you buy. Many online forum users have mentioned an issue with saving (the game has an auto save function) and I have experieced this quite early on in the storyline. At some point, you will turn the game of and when you resume, you'll be at a checkpoint you have long passed and it continues doing this. Make sure that you have a dedicated internet connection to install an update to fix this issue.

Other than that, I give Mafia 3 a 7/10
