A game where the story is a side quest

Reviewed by on

This installment in the Final Fantasy franchise delivers the true essence of open world exploration.

Like the opening tagline reads, A Final Fantasy for the fans and the first-timers, this game has an appeal to both those who have and have not played the games.

The large open world environment is stunning with plenty to explore and enough monster hunts and quests to ensure you don't miss any of the attractions FFXV developers offered us. Transition between battles and free-roam is non-existence almost to the likes of Final Fantasy XII but with a much slicker and fun combat system. Definitely one of the highlights of FFXV.

Play as Noctis, prince of Lucis along with his entourage with more modern and fresher personalities from traditional RPG's. If you prefer a game with fulfilling side quest you will quickly forget that FFXV has a story. The story is good but not the best the franchise has to offer however this is made up significantly in the hours spent immersed in everything FFXV has to offer. Some of the highlights like Fishing, playing Pinball amongst other things definitely add to the charm of an already stunning game.

With further DLC being rolled-out FFXV is excellent value for money with a massive suite of things to do and places to explore that has all the best elements of an RPG without any of the traditional nuisances. A must play for those who are and are not a fan of the franchise.

A treat for newcomers and diehard fans alike :)

One of the best things about this title is how it's such a treat for newcomers to the series and also for long time diehard fans like myself :) it's fresh and new but at the same time laden with nostalgia and beautiful moving headnods to games of the past :)

The graphics are astounding (even down to the food you cook at the campsites which really look like delicious PHOTOS of food!!! Don't play this when you are hungry haha ;), the music is gorgeous, the storyline is solid and well told with decent character development and dialogue and banter between the characters, the battle is fluid and engaging and the character skills are well thought out and very customisable :) speaking of customisable it's a lot of fun customising your car and chocobos and the characters clothing and accessories :) lots of side missions and extras to do aside from the main storyline and lots of beautiful areas to explore :)

I haven't played the DLC yet but I've heard it's fantastic also :) I really enjoyed the main story and extras in the Base game though :)

I recommend first watching the animals series FF15 Brotherhood and then watching the Blu Ray movie Kingsglaive before starting the game as it gives you so much beautiful awesome background story and sets the stage so perfectly for the game ^~^

Enjoy! You are in for a treat!

Im not sure what the heading means, but one thing is for sure; and that's that this is a great game.

Id suggest watching the Final Fantasy: Kingsglaive movie before starting your journey (wait for the end credit sequence ;)). The story ties together beautifully once you've done that.

Otherwise, id never really played a FF game before this, but this was fun, and different. Its such an immersive game, that you can start off ending your night; what i mean by that is, going to the bank after playing "an hour before you go" is a bit of a long shot. You WILL be playing for a while.

Got the game back in Feb and im still playing it. Discovered the dreaded Pitious Ruins (a mere 6 hours of gameplay without saving... EASY)

To wrap it up, i have this to say:

Graphics - 9 /10
Gameplay - 8/10
Just having fun - that's up to you kids

I have never been a final fantasy fan due to the turn based gameplay, but I certainly am one now!
They have revamped the combat system to be pure action, and they have done a brilliant job at it!
The score and visuals are just absolutely beautiful, not to mention the EPIC set pieces and fights!
This is a must buy for a ps4 owner. slow to start but once you get into the story, you are hooked!

For the fans and first timers

So I am currently 60 hours into gameplay and for the first time, I feel like I am play an FF game like the ones of old. Yeah sure the battle system is changed up a bit and the story line does seem a bit rushed, but thats all up to the player in my opinion. I have completed those 60 hours mentioned above, but am still only on chapter 5, whereas my wife is on 40 hours and is almost done with the game, as a first timer (almost., she also played FFXIII), she seems to be enjoying it and has only really complained about the camera angles at times. So all in all its definitely worth the purchase and as an FF fan I think I am glad at the direction the series has gone since the previous few releases. Well done Square Enix!

Very Disappointed with the Story

I've played and finished nearly every single Final Fantasy across a span of 12 years. Story-wise, I wasn't impressed with FFXII or FFXIII and, sadly, I can say the same for FFXV. The gameplay is excellent and the graphics are beautiful, but the story feels rushed and cheap. I didn't care about the characters and I felt no rise and flow of emotions at any point - maybe a tiny bit at the end.

I buy Final Fantasy for the stories, but I might take a break from them until the stories improve.

Unexpected (for me at least)

This game had only come to my attention 2 years ago, prior to that I played FF 13 and I loved it. This game has been in development for a long time (there was no ephemeral wait) and I can not express the same amount of excitement as my contemporaries who have been waiting longer than me. I was looking to buy this game on release however but soon had to abandon that hope as I had expended all my money. Later a retailer in South Africa had a Ultimate Collectors edition and I picked that up (it is a shame that they were limited but I regret nothing as it is such a splendid limited edition). My expectations of the game were really nonexistent. I did not think it was going to be amazing or bad. I had consulted several review sites to find a mix of anger and average reviews (8/10 mostly). There were complaints about it being too short, however this is only true if you do a small amount of quests and focus on the campaign. The game has so much more content and after the end game you unlock even more. The first two chapters are quite small compared to the plethora of things that you can do in the third chapter onwards. I have spent 12 hours just exploring and messing around from fishing, hunting quests, side quests , Chocobo riding etc. There is no lack of content if you just enjoy the game leisurely without focusing mainly on the story. Some reviewers have said this set up makes the the world seem indifferent to Noctis's problems and that may be true but it makes up for an immensely fun experience. The story in all honesty should not be consumed alone like other video games. One should Watch the anime and the movie to fully appreciate the story and characters. The anime develops each character and you feel immediate attached to them as soon as you start the game as a result. The Movie explains and gives some insight into what happens before Noctis sets out on his main quest; to reclaim his throne and home. The music is lovely and accentuates the right emotions at the right time. The initial environment is a dry desert area but soon you will see a varied world from wetlands to desert regions. The large variety of beasts make this world even more fantastical. The game is not perfect (weird camera at times and narrow combat in the campaign) but it has given me the most enjoyment of any game I have played in a while. I would honestly love to give it a ten out of ten but it is impossible for me because I feel so strongly for this game so zi may be biased. The most objective rating I would give it is a 9/10. If you read till the end then in other words "it is some damn good fun"
