Control the rage

The God of War has changed… and this is not the Kratos you know.

A difficult and unfamiliar road awaits as you explore a stunning retelling of a classic story. Join Kratos as he adventures through a deep and reflective journey of growth, violence and the desire to become a better man for the sake of his son. In a world of monsters, dragons and gods, the weight of responsibility rests heavy on your shoulders – and when your life is filled with blood and chaos, how can you prevent the mistakes of the past in order to protect your future?

A dangerous new era
This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series—satisfying combat; breathtaking scale; and a powerful narrative—and fuses them anew.

A bold new narrative
As mentor and protector to a son determined to earn his respect, Kratos is faced with an unexpected opportunity to master the rage that has long defined him. Questioning the dark lineage he’s passed on to his offspring, he hopes to make amends for the shortcomings – and horrors – of his past.

A darker world
Set within the untamed forests, mountains and realms of Norse lore, steel yourself for a distinctively new and dangerous land complete with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters and gods.

Vicious, physical combat
With an intimate, over-the-shoulder free camera that brings the action closer than ever, combat is up close, frenetic and unflinching. Kratos’ powerful magic axe is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration. Always be on your guard.

Worst thing is that it ends!!

God of War has truly utilized the technology of the current generation to create a beautiful work of art. So many triple A titles rely on the same formula, a big open world filled with the same repetitive missions to try create a dense game.
God of War creates a beautiful sandbox world that you can't but help explore. The combat is so satisfying where you can feel every slice of the axe tear an enemies flesh apart. The story develops a narrative that is so important and leaves you with a heart warming feeling. Only negative is that this game ends... ITS DEFINITELY A BUY!!!!

BTW negative reviews are probably from jealous xbox one owners ;)

Before I bought it (some time after launch) I'd been looking forward to this game for quite some time. Needless to say, I had considerable expectations of it. Yet even so, I was blown by, well, basically everything in God of War. The story is incredibly well written, the graphics are amazing, and the combat, while seemingly rigid at first, opens up into a great, customizable experience.

This is, without a doubt, one of those must have games that comes around one or twice in a consolw generation. If you have a PS4, you really should own this game.

A true masterpiece

This game is truly a masterpiece of development, story telling, setting, mood, action and adventure. It feels more mature than the previous God of War games, and this is a good thing. The fighting engine is one of the best I've ever experienced, the beats in the story telling are near perfect, the pacing of the game overall is engrossing and it will always keep you involved and throw you surprises in ways other than new enemies. The atmosphere they conjure through sheer detailed set dressing is without equal imo, the first time I went into the dark caves, the game delivered things beyond what my wild imagination conjured. It runs just as well on the base PS4 as it does on the PS4 Pro as well.

I had not played games seriously for quite some time before I got this game and this game brought back my passion for gaming in a big way. I am more into single player games than online multiplayer, and I never expected to experience this level of immersion in a game in my lifetime. Play with the hud off (they call it immersive mode) and you will truly get sucked in, at times I forgot I was playing a game it's all done so well. Playing with no hud also lets you flex your gameing experience muscles, and the game and puzzles are well designed enough that you don't need markers or anything to tell you what to do or where to go.

This for me is at the top of the pile of games I've loved to death, a highly recommended experience I believe is rich enough to warrant purchasing a console to experience it, if you do not have a PS4 yet. I shall be replaying it next year, perhaps the 3rd game ever I want to play more than once, and I've been gaming since the 1980s.

GET. IT. NOW. And discover a true gem of the modern gaming age, boy!

Not A Fan

Reviewed by on

As a preface, I understand that I am completely in the minority here.

With that being said, I really had not enjoyed the game at all. The visuals, lighting and attention to detail in the environments were all excellent, but where I found the game lacking was in terms of the story.

Every sequence of the game tended to lock you in the environment, and subsequently force you to scrounge around in it (collecting every pointless McGuffin) before you would be permitted to proceed. For argument sake, let us say that every game tends to do this...

But what every game doesn't do, is force you to re-enter previously cleared areas between 2-4 times, collecting just ONE one McGuffin, before being allowed to proceed. Too often I felt like the game was simply shifting the goal posts for me.

I did not like it at all...

Sorry guys :(

What can I say!

First the graphics and attention to detail in this game is AMAZING. Just when you think you have found every chest and picked up every ounce of coin in an area, somehow you discover another little hidden crack with some loot in it on your way out.

The art design is stunning. One of the reasons I was so excited about this game is the focus on the Norse legends. This game really did its research and the environments are rich with colors and honestly things I've never seen before in a video game.

The 9 realms are brought to life in a very grand and jaw dropping way. The story and little interactions between father and son throughout really pulls you into their relationship. There are times when the son acts like a typical kid where he asks if we are there yet, he constantly longs for his dead mother, sometimes Kratos wants to comfort his son but doesn't know how so he stops just shy of putting a reassuring hand on his son's shoulder.

Not to mention the combat is challenging. You will get into fights where you are out powered and will need to come back later once you've upgraded your gear more. The one long shot camera for the whole game really does make a difference. It makes you feel as if you are there and when you are just destroying an enemy with your bare hands, you see all that gore and detail.

This is by far the best ps4 exclusive and actually the greatest console game I have played to date ! Definitely recommend this game

I have thoroughly enjoyed my playthrough of this game. I enjoyed the earlier God of War games, but this one's story and characters were so much more compelling to me. In addition, I loved the gameplay of it - including the combat, but especially its puzzles and the depth of exploration it offered. However, I should add that people who were dead set on Kratos as he was portrayed earlier in the franchise or who expected/wanted the same gameplay will perhaps not like this new chapter in his story. But if you are open minded about games and keen for a great experience, I would recommend this to most gamers.

God of War shows that long running franchises can be reinvented and along with a passionate team can make it feel like it’s brand new. A mature story, new combat, excellent music and a rich world filled with lore shows that sometimes all you need is grow a bit like our hero Kratos. The combat may be tough and maybe a little more enemy variety. God of War has shown that single player games aren’t dead. I can’t wait for what journey Kratos and Aterus takes us on next but I’m ready to take on all gods in our way. This is truly one game you don't want to miss out on.

This game is amazing. The Game play is completely different from the older games but that is not necessarily a bad thing, in fact the new combat system is one of the games biggest assets. I'll be honest, I was scared of the way the game was directed and was reluctant to play it for fear of the game not living up to its predecessors.

After seeing a few of the ratings that other publishers were giving the game (without reading the reviews), I thought I would take the plunge and play it.

I can definitely say this game is not like the predecessors. I was first disappointed with the beginning of the game as I am used to killing hordes of enemies before having all my powers stripped from me but with this game it started slow with no combat till about 10-15mins into the game. As I continued playing through I can see Kratos is struggling to be a comforting father to his son as he lost his previous family in the first game of the series.

I become attached to the new side of Kratos as he continues to hide and run from his past but then I am taken back and it hits me in my feelings that Kratos is forced to run back to his past in order to help his son.

I would recommend this game to anyone. The game may fill you with emotions that you would not expect from a God of War game and I am glad I took the plunge to play this game. I am already on my 2nd play through on the hardest difficulty

Set in a new, Norse mythology-inspired world and starring a familiar but thoughtfully reimagined character, God of War’s fish-out-of-Greek-water tale is a nonstop whirlwind of emotions. It’s all framed by one continuous camera shot that never cuts away or takes the focus off of the heart of it all: Kratos’ relationship with his young son, Atreus. But the story also encompasses an indelible supporting cast, a gorgeous world consistently rewarding to explore, and immensely satisfying combat.

An "Uncharted Horizon" awaits

I know the heading compiles the previous massive Sony Exclusives but this basically sums up what God of War truly is, A combination of the excellent, tear-jerking and breathtaking story telling Naughty Dog portrays in each of their games mixed with the open worldliness, RPG elements and "choose your weapons wisely" game play that Horizon has to offer, If you have not played either of the games i mentioned its okay but you would appreciate God of War way way more.

The story is an innocent tale, non like the previous God of War games, and if you're like me and played the 6 games before, Yes 6 not 3 :P, then seeing Kratos like this is.. something i personally never thought i'd see and such light really shines in moments of the game when you want him and Atreus to have that connection, thats the amazing story telling that just makes you grip your controller harder and even speak to your television as if they can hear you.

As for the combat.. if you like a challenge then i definitely recommend this, if you played Horizon Zero Dawn then you sure know you can't walk into every fight the same, and the same applies here with the hoard of different enemy types you face, as well as some hidden bosses who... really give you a whipping if you feeling the game isn't hard at all.

At the end, every gamer is different. I love games that take you on a journey and keep you in this amazement that is the story and God of War did that to me, from the simple things like watching the cold on their breath as they breathe out, YES! graphics are AMAZING!, to the way the music chimes in on key moments and to the boss fights that make you feel it, showing that you are fighting a boss and not just some random.. This is truly a beautiful and breath taking game and i recommend this to even the hardest of Fortnite players out there, because games transport you but this? this story will transcends you.

A New Take on Kratos...and it's BRILLIANT

Reviewed by on

If you've played the previous GOW games on PS2, 3 and PSP then you'd know that GOW is a massive franchise exclusive to the PS platform and that it provided gamers with a gripping, high action adventure from start to end with many "oooh, ahhhh, whaaat" moments along the way. Kratos' main story was brought to a thunderous and sad conclusion at the end of 2010's GOW 3. That was an epic game and an all time classic. It was also the last of the "original" GOW games with the exception of Ghost of Sparta which explored more of his past on PSP. That was also a fantastic game I played and finished many times.

Onward to the new one - it's a whole new take on GOW as a whole. Think Last of Us and Uncharted meets GOW. What a brilliant concept! Now the camera is centred behind you from beginning to end. A first for a GOW game. This view offers more closeness to Kratos and gives you a more in depth experience. It also makes combat all the more challenging as enemies can flank you. Thankfully your son, Atreus calls out to you telling you where off screen attacks will come from so you can brace yourself/take defensive or even offensive action depending on the situation. Speaking of Atreus - this is a completely new addition to GOW. For the first time ever I have a companion in the game. He helps show a different side to Kratos. He has a good heart and always wants to help others while Kratos trains him in the ways of battle and shows him how to be extra cautious of others. The new weapon gifted to Kratos by his late wife is epic! The Leviathan Axe! This axe can be used in melee attacks to great effect and can be thrown at enemies for more combat versatility. It is also most helpful in puzzle solving and world traversal. An excellent idea and a joy to call back to your hand after throwing it an infinite number of times :) An old school classic has made a return as well, though I don't want to spoil it for you ;) This all makes the combat thrilling, more challenging and oh so rewarding!! RPG elements abound with weapon, shield and skill growth with enhancements and buffs for each in the form of armour, and runic attachments amongst others.

The graphics are spectacular!! Second to none. Santa Monica Studio have raised the bar even higher. Experienced on a standard PS4 or the Pro is awesome with the latter offering an even richer, smoother graphical look and feel provided you have a high quality HDR 4K UHD TV. I highly recommend the Pro but if you don't have one then do not fear. Your experience will still be great on the standard PS4 too. There is so much to experience that I find myself awe struck at the magnificence and sheer scale of it all. The new Nordic world to explore is alluring and richly detailed. The story is very gripping that pulled me in from the sad yet inspiring beginning for a deep and emotional, driven to beat the odds action packed adventure and will do the same for you too.

This game is incredible. From the combat system to the graphics, the developers have done a stunning job at crafting a beautiful and gripping game. The combat reminds me of Dark Souls - lots of dodging, ducking and blocking - and has intricate combos and spells that you can unleash upon your enemies. The world itself is filled with secrets, treasures and all sorts of grotesque enemies - love the new open world game play. The story is gripping, original and one can definitely see the characters develop and grow, especially with regards to Kratos and his relationship with Atreus. Definitely worth buying - take it slow, explore everything and enjoy the game!

"Do not be sorry, be better". Well, it is. Much better. After 30 minutes of playing this game, I was sold. From being one of the best looking games I've ever seen, to doing the impossible by topping the opening of God of War 3 with the Poseidon battle, to refreshing the entire series, God of War delivers. In the past only the Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill and Far Cry series' have had the guts to reinvent their entire games from the ground-up to this extent, and God of War succeeds brilliantly at it without losing the spirit of the God of War series - which involves brutality and fighting Gods and other mean things far too big to fit on your screen. To me it surpasses the original trilogy (let's exclude Ascension, which phoned it in). It has one of the most satisfying combat systems in a game - a healthy combination of some Dark Souls, Hellblade and classic God of War - as well as one of the most visceral. You'll feel every blow and heavy attack, and every impact. It does something that hasn't been done before with its one-take camera, and the result is something beyond words to experience in real-time. It's hard to rave about this game without spoiling anything, but let's just say that after Bloodborne this is another one of the PlayStation's greatest ever games, and it's one of the most certain Game of the Year contenders I've ever played this early into a year.
