Surpasses A Masterpiece

The original Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 is one of the best games I've ever experienced, which is why I was apprehensive about a ground-up remake for PS4. While prettier visuals are always welcome, it's definitely a risk to lose the spirit of the original or the artistic vision in the process. Astoundingly, Bluepoint Games rose to the challenge with confidence, delivering a PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus that masterfully surpasses the original while at the same time delivering one of the most beautiful games, artistically, on the PS4. Without losing what made the original so great and without losing the atmosphere or vision, Shadow of the Colossus has been updated to the modern era wonderfully. It has not aged one bit, which is insane given that it's essentially a 13 year old game. It really is a timeless classic, and Bluepoint has kept the experience as closely to the original as possible. They've even left the original control scheme in if you want to make things tougher and more old school, as the updated, more modern control scheme actually makes the game a bit easier. On top of that Bluepoint added a bunch of cool features such as Filters, which allow you to change the entire look of the game instantly by switching between the 15 various colour filters, such as 'Night' or 'Mono' or 'Vivid' or 'Warm' or 'Cool' and so on, and these drastically alter the aesthetic to freshen things up. If you're lucky to play this on a PS4 Pro, you'll get the choice of two modes, 'Favour Performance' mode (1080p and 60fps) or 'Favour Resolution' mode (4k and 30fps). While I started out the game in Performance Mode, I soon switched to Resolution mode and never looked back, because the game is mind-blowing in its visuals. It's like looking at a painting pretty much all of the time, and the frame rate drop does not for one minute affect the gameplay or detract from the experience. In a nutshell, this remake on PS4 exceeds expectations, and should not be missed by anyone who has not experienced the original. Even if the game is not your cup of tea, it's one of the most unique experiences in gaming and you should at least try it, if not for its captivating story and atmosphere alone.

This game is so true to the original while still recreating it for modern audiences. It is an absolute must play and looks incredible. Particularly on PS4 Pro.

Enjoyable & moving experience

I was so happy to finally be able to play this game, having missed out on it on the PS2. The graphics and atmosphere in it were gorgeous. The controls are all that felt a bit outdated, with the horseriding proving to be a headache at intervals. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who wants to play a solemn and moving game.
