Assetto Corsa Competizione is an extraordinary racing simulation game allowing players to experience the real atmosphere of the GT3 championship, competing against official drivers, teams, cars and circuits reproduced in-game with the highest level of accuracy ever achieved. Sprint, Endurance and Spa 24 Hours races come to life with an incredible level of realism, in both single and multiplayer modes. Born from KUNOS Simulazioni's long-term experience, this racing simulator takes full advantage of Unreal Engine 4 to ensure photorealistic weather conditions and graphics, night races, motion capture animations, reaching a new standard in terms of driving realism and immersion, thanks to its further improved tyre and aerodynamic models.

The launch of Assetto Corsa Competizione is part of a full plan:

  • The Intercontinental GT Pack paid DLC* introduces four iconic international circuits from four different continents - Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit (South Africa), Suzuka Circuit (Japan), Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca (United States) and Mount Panorama Circuit (New South Wales Australia). Players owning these tracks will extend the GT Series to the Intercontinental GT Challenge by Pirelli, providing a challenging driving experience using an exclusive layout finely reproduced with Laserscan technology, allowing for extreme track reproduction precision and detail. The Intercontinental GT Pack DLC also adds more than 45 new car liveries, 30 new teams and 50 new drivers along with all-new game modes from the real-life Intercontinental GT Challenge powered by Pirelli. Will be available later this summer.
  • The GT4 Pack paid DLC, adding +10 new GT4 cars, will be available this summer.
  • The British Pack paid DLC, offering 3 new iconic circuits that complete the 7-race calendar of the British GT Championship, will be available this winter.

Assetto Corsa Competizione (PS4)

Reviewed by on

When it comes to consoles, specifically the PS4, there is not much available for us hardcore SIM enthusiasts. With this late entry (on the doorstep of the PS5 launch) comes the latest masterpiece and brainchild of the guys and gals over at KUNOS.

Now, make no mistake, this game does not quite hold a candle to its PC variant in terms of graphics and refresh rate, but that is also dependent on the specifications of your PC and whether or not you are using the standard PS4 (like myself) or the PS4 PRO.

For PS4 however, this title gets the job done when it comes to filling that void for a hardcore racing series, specifically since the content updates have stopped from the other two titans in the console SIM genre available to PS4, namely GT Sport and Project Cars 2. Not to say that these are the only 2 titles available, there is a long list of driving sims available, but when it comes to league racing, these two are at the forefront on console. Assetto Corsa Competizione is a fresh injection of SIM content for all of us who watched the YouTube events held on PC since initial launch and wanted to get our hands on the game ourselves, but a gaming PC was always just out of reach.

Be prepared, however. The game is not without bugs. Whilst the team at KUNOS work constantly to provide us with content and patches to fix these issues, the odd "blue screen and error title" is still there (for those of you who played the previous Assetto Corsa title - you will know what I am talking about) and there are graphic glitches here and there, accompanied with lower refresh rates of 30fps, which sometimes can become annoying if you have a keen eye for attention to detail. Having a TV with a gaming mode can help with tearing, or playing on a decent gaming monitor as well.
I believe that at the time of writing this review, a 60fps patch is being or has been released for the PS4, which is aimed at the more powerful PS4 Pro.

It is not all doom and gloom, however. The downgrade in visual aesthetics comes at the cost of keeping the Assetto Corsa physics and sound models we have all grown to appreciate, prevalent in the console version of the game. Yes, there is no compromise here, thankfully. The driving is superb on a SIM rig set up. I personally have the Logitech G29.

Overall, with the recent release of the brilliantly crafted GT4 series, and additional tracks, Assetto Corsa Competizione is a must have for any SIM racing enthusiast on a console - specifically PS4.

Will the game work on PS5? I will stick my neck out and say yes, given that the game launched this year on current-gen console, which effectively marks the end of the PS4 era. I am sure KUNOS will announce PS5 compatibility once the actual PS5 launch goes live and pre-orders are listed. I presume their core focus right now is to fix the bugs. If, and when this game makes its way to next-gen console, I am sure that the patches will bring it up to spec (barring refresh rate) of the current PC version and racing can continue without compromise.

My score? 4/5.
